Three Rebels Sit in Top 20 Heading into Round Two
RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico – At the conclusion of day one of competition in Puerto Rico, Ole Miss heads into round two tied for 6th place with a 3-under score.
Ole Miss led the field in par-5 scoring (-15) while making 19 birdies throughout Round 1. On the leaderboard for the Rebels, Hugo Townsend, Brett Schell, and Cameron Tankersley all are in the top 20. Grad transfer Townsend leads for Ole Miss and sits tied for 10th at 2-under overall.
"We did a lot of really good things today," head coach Chris Malloy said. "Unfortunately, we didn't finish out the round like we wanted and that cost us a couple of spots on the leaderboard. We have to continue to learn the importance of each and every shot and how much it means for momentum throughout a round of golf. Our guys will be motivated to get back out there tomorrow."
Townsend, teeing off on Hole 8, played steady golf as he went bogey-free for 15 straight holes. The grad transfer made three consecutive birdies at the turn to launch him up the leaderboard and added an additional birdie on par-5 Hole 5. Townsend will look to the second round to continue climbing up the leaderboard with his tied for 10th place and a 2-under score.
Brett Schell, who finished in 4th place in the 2022 Puerto Rico Classic, made five birdies throughout his first round of play and is second in the field in par-5 scoring (-4). The junior got hot on Hole 15, making his first birdie of the day, and didn't stop there as he made all five of his birdies on the next nine holes. Just in line with Schell is Cameron Tankersley, who also is tied for 19th place with a 1-under score. Tankersley secured a bogey-free back nine, playing even all the way to Hole 18 where he capitalized with an eagle on the par-5 hole. With an additional birdie on Hole 2, the freshman looks to tomorrow to keep his momentum going.
Patton Samuels put in six birdies throughout his 18 holes, but could not keep his momentum steady throughout play. The freshman shot 1-over for the day and will head to the clubhouse tied for 48th place.
Sarut Vongchaisit and Kye Meeks, competing individually, round out for the Rebels and completed a 2-over score through their first 18 holes of competition. They both sit at tied for 55th place.
