Track & Field’s Jalani Davis Wins SEC Weight Throw Title
2/24/2023 | Track and Field
Davis Moved Up to No. 5 in Collegiate History and No. 12 in World History
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Ole Miss track & field senior Jalani Davis dismantled the meet record in the women's weight throw en route to a gold medal, Tarik Robinson-O'Hagan became the best collegiate freshman in the history of the men's weight throw, and several Rebels advanced to finals following a productive first day of the 2023 SEC Indoor Championships on Friday.
Senior Jalani Davis was already among the best collegiate weight throwers of all-time entering competition, but her heroics on Friday put her into an elite company among some of the best in the history of the world. Davis won the SEC title at a PR of 24.63m/80-09.75, shattering Stamatia Scarvelis' 2019 meet record of 24.06m/78-11.25 by nearly two feet.
Davis took the lead in the second round at 23.18m/76-00.75 and never looked back. In the fourth round, Davis tossed a one-foot PR of 24.39m/80-00.25 to become just the sixth collegiate member of the 80-foot club, but in the sixth round she dug deep for her winning 24.63m/80-09.75 – the ninth-best throw in collegiate history that moves her from No. 8 to No. 5 on the collegiate all-time list.
This year, that throw improves upon her spot atop the NCAA leaderboards, as well as ranking No. 5 in the United States and No. 6 in the world. Historically, in addition to ranking third in Ole Miss history and No. 5 in collegiate history, Davis now ranks No. 11 among Americans all-time, as well as No. 12 in world history.
Her field series in general was one for the ages as well. Davis is now just the third collegiate thrower to ever throw beyond 80 feet multiple times within the same series, joining collegiate record holder Brittany Riley of SIU in 2007, and Rebel teammate Shey Taiwo from the 2022 Music City Challenge last indoor season.
Jasmine Mitchell – the reigning NCAA runner-up in the weight throw – earned her fourth SEC weight medal in as many tries, taking silver to Davis' gold at 23.15m/75-11.50. Senior Tedreauna Britt also launched a PR, scoring for the Rebels in eighth place at 20.43m/67-00.50 to move into No. 7 in Ole Miss history.
In the men's weight throw, freshman phenom Tarik Robinson-O'Hagan somehow found a way to stun the throwing world again, definitively becoming the greatest freshman weight thrower in NCAA history.
Robinson-O'Hagan went toe-to-toe with the reigning NCAA Champion Bobby Colantonio of Alabama, finishing runner-up by just 3.5 inches in a powerful showing for the freshman. Robinson-O'Hagan took the lead in the second round at 22.33m/73-03.25 before Colantonio countered with three straight improvements – led by his ultimate winning throw of 23.71m/77-09.50 in the fifth round. But Robinson-O'Hagan started to turn some heads, first with a fifth-round PR 23.14m/75-11 and a bombastic final round two-foot PR blast of 23.62m/77-6 – the best throw ever by a collegiate freshman.
Entering competition, there had only ever been four 23-meter throws by collegiate freshmen – including a 23.05m/75-07.50 by Robinson-O'Hagan two weeks ago at Vanderbilt. After Friday night, though, Robinson-O'Hagan took down both the collegiate freshman record set by Kansas' Gleb Dudarev in 2017 at 23.44m/76-11, as well as the record for most 23-meter throws ever by a freshman with three total.
Senior pole vaulter Noah Mumme was superb in his first SEC meet, sailing clean over his first four bars en route to a silver medal. Mumme topped out at a career-best 5.30m/17-04.50, only finishing behind champion Keaton Daniel of Kentucky, who cleared 5.40m/17-08.50 on his first try. That height for Mumme puts him into a tie for No. 4 in Ole Miss history, and his runner-up finish is the best by a Rebel in the men's pole vault indoors since Olympian Sam Kendricks won the 2014 title.
In the men's distance medley relay to close out the night, the Rebel quartet of Shane Bracken, Cade Flatt, Chase Rose and Anthony Camerieri nearly made Ole Miss the first school to five-peat in the DMR in two decades, but a thrilling anchor leg by Camerieri came less than a half-second short as the Rebels took silver at 9:33.18. Camerieri turned in a splendid mile anchor for the second straight week, splitting 3:54.49 to force the photo finish with victor Tennessee (9:32.75).
Other Rebels scoring on Day One were the women's distance medley relay of Kristel van den Berg, Gabrielle Matthews, Madison Hulsey and Loral Winn in fourth place (11:11.39), Cole Bullock in the men's 5K in fifth place (14:18.58), and Skylar Boogerd (seventh, 16:22.39) and Ryann Helmers (eighth, 16:27.08) in the women's 5K.
Ole Miss set itself up for some more points on the track Saturday with eight qualifiers through the prelims on Friday.
Senior McKenzie Long put together the best day of her career with two blistering races in the 60-meter dash and 200-meter dash prelims. Long opened with a career-best 7.22 in the 60-meter to earn a time qualifier spot to Saturday's final, before taking down the Ole Miss school record in the 200-meter dash just hours later with a massive three-tenth PR of 23.00.
Long now ranks within the NCAA top-20 in both events, entering the last possible qualifying day for the national meet ranked tied for 12th in the 200 and tied for 17th in the 60.
In the men's 800-meter, All-Americans Baylor Franklin and Tiarnan Crorken both made it through to the final, but not without some theatrics. Franklin won the first heat for an automatic qualifying spot at 1:49.76, but in the second heat Crorken fell just short of winning the AQ berth and had to wait out the other two heats to see if he made it in on time. After the fourth and final heat, Crorken came away with the last time qualifier spot in the final by one hundredth of a second at 1:50.05.
Ole Miss will be well-represented in the mile on Saturday as well with four total qualifiers. Three Rebel men – Dalton Hengst (fourth, 4:04.68, AQ), Shane Bracken (sixth, 4:04.73) and Gabe Scales (10th, 4:05.29, PR) all made it out, as did All-American senior Loral Winn in the women's edition. Winn was second in her heat for an automatic bid, running the third-best prelim time at 4:43.87.
Competition resumes for Ole Miss on the second and final day of the SEC Indoor Championships on Saturday afternoon with the men's high jump at 2:15 p.m. CT.
