Softball Falls To Louisiana 3-2 In Extras

2/27/2023 | Softball

Rebels Wrap Up 15 Game Road Swing

LAFAYETTE, La. – Ole Miss softball rallied to tie the game up in the top of the seventh inning but was unable to complete the comeback, falling to Louisiana 3-2 in extra innings Monday night at Yvette Girouard Field.

Louisiana (10-6, 0-0 Sun Belt) struck first in the opening frame. The Ragin Cajuns used a walk and a pair of singles to score the first run of the ball game and had had an opportunity for more, but Mya Stevenson made a heads up play to throw out a base runner after she rounded first on a single.

Ole Miss (9-6, 0-0 SEC) threatened in the second, looking to even the score after Mikayla Allee doubled. However, the Rebels were unable to bring her around to tie things up. In the bottom half of the inning, Aynslie Furbush did her thing in the circle. The righty punched out two batters and stranded a runner in scoring position to end the Louisiana threat.

From there, scoring opportunities were few and far between as Furbush and ULL's Meghan Schorman were locked in a pitcher's duel. The two traded zeroes for four innings until Louisiana broke through with a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth to double their lead.

Down its final three outs, Ole Miss' found some late-inning magic. Allee got things started with her third hit of the night, and Catelyn Riley followed with a double in the gap, putting the tying runs in scoring position. With two away, Jalia Lassiter wore the 1-1 pitch to load the bases and turn the lineup over to Sikes in the leadoff spot. The fifth-year senior and Ole Miss caught a break as the shortstop made an errant throw to second that sailed into the outfield and allowed two Rebels to score, tying the game at two.

Furbush continued to battle in the circle, helping Ole Miss send the game into extras. Unfortunately, the Ragin Cajuns loaded the bases with a pair of walks and a double in the bottom of the eighth innings, and a walk-off single ended the Monday night clash.

The Rebels return to Oxford to host the Ole Miss Classic March 3-5.
