Track & Field Concludes NCAA Indoor with Pair of Top-15 Team Finishes

Ole Miss One of Three Nationwide to Place Men and Women Top-15 Two Straight Years

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Ole Miss track & field continued to prove its worth on the national stage, posting a pair of top-15 team finishes at the conclusion of an excellent stay at the 2023 NCAA Indoor Championships on Saturday.

The Rebel women finished in 10th place at 23 total points, the second-best finish in Ole Miss women's history with the second-most points – all from just three women. The Ole Miss men finished tied for 12th at 17 points, their third-straight top-15 team finish – a record streak in the combined history of the men's and women's programs at Ole Miss, indoors or outdoors.

Ole Miss was one of just eight schools nationwide this year to place both its men's and women's teams within the top-15 at the indoor national meet, and in the last two years, Ole Miss stands as one of just three schools to place both programs within the top-15 nationally alongside Arkansas and Texas.

"I am so proud of both of our teams and how they competed this weekend," said Ole Miss head coach Connie Price-Smith. "We had a great weekend with some wonderful performances, and I can't say enough about how well our team stepped up to the challenge here at NCAAs."

Senior McKenzie Long led the Rebel charge on Saturday with two gutsy performances in the women's 60-meter dash and 200-meter dash finals. Long – who was one of six women to advance to finals in both events – had to dig deep in the finals after a powerful but draining pair of performances in Friday night's semifinals, her first-ever races at altitude. But Long was unphased on Saturday, scoring seven crucial NCAA points for the Rebel women – the first national points of her career.

Long opened the day in the 60-meter dash final, where she finished seventh at 7.19 seconds in a race that saw the collegiate record lowered yet again by champion Julien Alfred of Texas at 6.94. Long is the first Rebel woman to score in the 60 since Asia Cooper finished eighth in 2013, and she is one of just four Ole Miss women to ever earn First-Team All-America status in the event.

Long had little time to rest, though, as the 200-meter dash final awaited her barely 30 minutes later. In the first heat of the 200, Long was second at 22.54, which was good for fourth place by event's end – the best finish ever by a Rebel woman in the 200 indoors.

Long's exploits this weekend cap a fantastic first indoor season with Ole Miss, during which she took down three school records – including dismantling both the 60-meter (7.10) and 200-meter (22.48) records in the semifinals on Friday night.

Senior Baylor Franklin scored his first career points as well in the men's 800-meter final Saturday after punching his first-ever ticket to an NCAA final on Friday night. Franklin originally finished seventh at 1:48.21, but was bumped up to sixth place following a disqualification, giving Franklin a First-Team All-American honor and the Ole Miss men three points on their way to a tie for 12th place in the team standings.

Franklin is only the fourth Rebel to ever score in the men's 800-meter indoors, and combined with the scoring duo of John Rivera Jr. (third) and Tiarnan Crorken (fifth) last season, this marks only the second time in school history that the Rebels have scored in the 800 in consecutive years alongside back-to-back years in 1990-91.

Ole Miss also received a handful of Second-Team All-America performances in both the women's and men's shot put finals.

Jalani Davis – fresh off her NCAA title win in the women's weight throw on Friday night – finished ninth in the shot put Saturday at 17.50m/57-5, just 2.5 inches shy of scoring another point for the Rebels. Teammate Jasmine Mitchell – the third-place finisher in the weight last night – was 15th at 15.08m/49-05.75. The duo were the only women's throwers nationally to attempt the weight/shot double this season, and were among five total across both genders.

One of those five was freshman Tarik Robinson-O'Hagan, who concluded a bombastic first indoor campaign with the Rebels with an 11th-place finish in the shot put at 19.48m/63-11. Robinson-O'Hagan was the third-place finisher in the weight throw last night – the best finish by a freshman in that event since 2013 – and he was the lone freshman in competition in Albuquerque tonight.

Ole Miss will turn the page quickly to the outdoor season, opening at Auburn's Tiger Track Classic next week on March 17-18.
