Men’s Golf Concludes Day One at Seminole Intercollegiate

Round Two Suspended for Darkness, Rebels Sit Tied for Second

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – After competing through 30-33 holes in windy conditions, No. 22 Ole Miss men's golf wrapped day one of the Seminole Intercollegiate tied for 2nd place with a 3-over overall score. The Rebels were set to play in 36 holes during day one, but the competition was cut short due to a delayed start time and darkness.

Ole Miss had rough starts to both first and second rounds but put on the gas in both back-nines of the day to keep the competition going. Overall, the Rebels are second in the field in birdies, sinking 28 throughout the day.

"We did a great job of battling back from a horrendous start to both of our first two rounds," head coach Chris Malloy said. "I think our younger guys learned a lot about the importance of playing disciplined golf on certain holes and certain pin positions that you simply can't be aggressive too. Anytime you make big numbers like we did today it's tough to be successful. At some point we need to develop some consistency to what we are doing and keep progressing as we get closer to post season play. We have a lot of golf left tomorrow and we need to keep digging out of the hole we dug for ourselves. Again, I was very proud of the fight and attitude these guys showed today."

Ole Miss finished 12-15 holes of Round 2 before having to suspend play. The Rebels will continue the final holes of the second round and follow with the final round of the Seminole Intercollegiate tomorrow, March 14, beginning with an 8:00 a.m. CT shotgun start.

"Hugo [Townsend] didn't really have his best stuff tee to green today but relied on his short game to keep him in it," said head coach Malloy.

Hugo Townsend was the lead Rebel of the day as he led through the entirety of day one at the Seminole Legacy Golf Course for Ole Miss. Townsend went low with a 6-under overall score and leads the field in birdies heading into the final day of competition. During Round 1, the graduate transfer went bogey-free for 17 holes while knocking in seven birdies. His first-round score of 68 (-4) put him in 1st place heading into Round 2. During the second round, Townsend put in four birdies including back-to-back birdies on Holes 16 and 17 to give him a tied for 2nd place going into the final day of competition.

Sarut Vongchaisit played steady golf, maintaining a bogey-free back nine and a 1-under first-round score to launch him in the top 20 after the first 18 holes. The Bangkok, Thailand, native kept his pace in the second round, going bogey-free for his first eight holes. Vongchaisit will head into the final day of the competition tied for 12th place at 1-over overall.

Competing individually for Ole Miss and making his Rebel debut, C.J. Easley shot for par on 23 holes while chipping in three birdies and an eagle. Easley sits in the top-20 at tied for 16th going into day two of the Seminole Intercollegiate.

Both freshmen, Cameron Tankersley and Patton Samuels, are tied for 27th place after 33 holes in Tallahassee. Tankersley managed a bogey-free back nine in the first round, while Samuels sank three back-to-back birdies in his back-nine of the second round.

Wrapping up for Ole Miss, Brett Schell looks to the final day to improve on his tied for 69th placement.
