Men’s Golf Wraps Day One of All-American Intercollegiate Tied for Second

3/20/2023 | Men's Golf

HOUSTON, Texas – After competing in 36 holes in the first day of the All-American Intercollegiate, Ole Miss men's golf will head to the clubhouse tied for 2nd place with an overall score of 574 (-2). Ole Miss has three Rebels making appearances in the top-20 after the first two rounds.

Overall, Ole Miss led the 21-team field in par-5 scoring (-10). The Rebels chipped in 33 birdies and went par for 113 holes throughout the first day of competition.

"I was proud of our guys for hanging tough out there today," said head coach Chris Malloy. "Besides Hugo [Townsend], we really didn't have our best stuff in some tough conditions and really grinded out an under-par round. We need to clean up some simple mistakes that cost us a few shots and we can make a run tomorrow."

Leading for Ole Miss for the second consecutive tournament is graduate transfer, Hugo Townsend, who is heading into the final round tied for 4th place at 4-under overall. Townsend started the day shooting steady golf with an even first round score. His bogey-free back nine carried him into the second round with momentum, and he didn't let up as he went bogey-free for 17 straight holes in his second round. Townsend, additionally, chipped in five birdies to give him a 68 (-4) round score and put him in a three-stroke deficit behind first place.

Cameron Tankersley put in work in his eighth tournament in the lineup, as he made seven birdies and an eagle through his first 36 holes of the day. The freshman found success on the par-5 holes as he is tied for leading the 108-player field in par-5 scoring (-6). Tankersley's tied for 15th with an even overall score going into the final round.

Not far behind is C.J. Easley, making his first appearance in the starting lineup. Easley began the first round with a 1-under front nine score but fell in the back nine to have a 1-over round score. Easley bounced back with a bogey-free back nine with three birdies in his second round performance to put him alongside Tankersley tied for 15th at even-par.

Sarut Vongchaisit was able to put in seven birdies throughout day one of the All-American Intercollegiate. He sits tied for 34th at 3-over overall. Patton Samuels wraps up scoring for Ole Miss and looks to the final round to improve his tied for 58th placement.

Competing in the All-American Individual tournament on the Members Course of the Golf Club of Houston, Brett Schell had a standout second round, going bogey-free for all 18 holes while making seven birdies – four being back-to-back on Holes 14, 15, 16, and 17. Schell's second round score of 65 (-7) launched him up the individual leaderboard to first place as he has a two-stroke lead for the title.

Ole Miss will tee off the final round of the All-American Intercollegiate tomorrow morning, March 21, with an 8:00 a.m. CT shotgun start. The Rebels will be paired with Louisville, Kansas State, and Tennessee.
