Rebels Pick Up 20th Victory
OXFORD, Miss. – With dominant pitching in the circle, Ole Miss softball shut out Memphis 6-0 Tuesday night at the Ole Miss Softball Complex to pick up its 20th victory of the season.
The Rebels (20-14, 1-5 SEC) tossed their seventh shutout of the season and the fifth at home this month. Makenna Kliethermes picked up her sixth win on the year, going 4.0 innings and striking out four before handing the ball off to Brooke Vestal to finish the job.
Offensively, Ole Miss outhit Memphis 7-3. Jamie Mackay led the team with two hits and drove in a pair. Mya Stevenson also contributed run support with her tenth home run of the season.
After both teams stranded runners on base in the first inning, Aynslie Furbush led off the second with a base hit up the middle. Savana Sikes followed, roping a double in the gap to put the Rebels in business with a pair in scoring position with no outs. The next two batters to step to the plate drove in runs as Keila Kamoku recorded a sacrifice fly, and Paige Smith doubled off the wall in center field to make it a 2-0 lead for Ole Miss.
Kliethermes and the defense continued to work clean innings in the field, keeping the Tiger offense off the board; however, Memphis did the same as Ole Miss left runners in scoring position in the third and fourth. The Rebels finally broke through in the fifth when Mya Stevenson launched a two-run shot over the fence in left to double the lead. Looking to add to the lead, three Rebels worked walks to load the bases. With the table set, Mackay punched a single right up the middle to drive in two more runs and give Ole Miss a six-run lead.
Vestal took over in the circle for the final two innings, facing seven batters to record the final six outs of the Rebels' 6-0 victory.
Ole Miss hits the road this weekend for a three-game series with No. 19 Auburn March 31-April 2.
