Men’s Golf Kicks Off SEC Championship Tied for Fourth
4/19/2023 | Men's Golf
Tankersley and Townsend Lead for the Rebels in the Top 15
ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. – The Ole Miss men's golf team began the 2023 SEC Championship at the Sea Island Golf Course with a solid start as the Rebels sit tied for fourth place after day one of competition. The Rebels put up a first-round score of 275 (-5) with two Rebels on the leaderboard inside the top 15.
The par-70, 7,005-yard Sea Island Golf Course brought success to Ole Miss as it leads the field in par-5 scoring (-6), a recurring theme for the Rebels. Ole Miss made 12 birdies and two eagles through day one at St. Simons Island.
"Today was a good start for our team overall," said head coach Chris Malloy. "I didn't think we had our best stuff throughout the day but managed to hang in there and put ourselves in a good position. Anytime you have two eagles that certainly helps. We have to come out with the same mindset tomorrow and create some momentum early."
Three Rebels put in par or better rounds to contribute to their 5-under first round. Leading the pack is freshman Cameron Tankersley. Tankersley made his SEC Championship debut with a birdie on Hole 1 to set the tone of the day. He followed with two birdies on the back nine, including an eagle on Hole 15 to give him a 67 (-3) first-round score and place tied for 5th.
Hugo Townsend is right behind his Rebel teammate as he put in a 68 (-2) first round. Townsend played steady golf as he went bogey-free for 17 consecutive holes throughout the day while chipping in three birdies. The graduate transfer is tied for 11th after his first day at the SEC Championship.
Sarut Vongchaisit started the day on a hot streak with three birdies in the front nine. Vongchaisit's momentum lulled in the back nine, but the senior was able to pull off a 69 (-1) first round, placing him tied for 23rd.
Patton Samuels made an eagle on par-5 Hole 7 to give him an edge on day one. The freshman chipped in two additional birdies to end his round at 1-over and tied for 39th.
Wrapping up scoring for the Rebels is Kye Meeks, who shot a first-round score of 73 (+3) and is tied for 53rd heading into Round 2.
The Rebels' second round from St. Simons Island is set to tee off beginning at 8:50 a.m. CT tomorrow morning at Hole 1.
