Ole Miss Finishes Stroke Play Portion in 6th Place with Overall Score of 839 (-1)
ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. – The Ole Miss men's golf team capitalized on the final day of stroke play at the SEC Championship to make the cut to match play for the first time since the 2017-18 season. The Rebels shot scores of 275-286-278—839 (-1) to earn a 6th place finish in stroke play.
Coming into the final round in 9th place, the Rebels' backs were against the wall to make the top-8 cut toward match play. Ole Miss responded with three Rebels shooting par or better rounds for the day, including a big three-under back-nine push to move Ole Miss up three spots on the leaderboard.
"I can't say enough about the fight that our group showed out there today. We had guys sick, struggling on the course, and they never wavered down the stretch. In this conference and in this tournament, the margin for error is so slim," said head coach Chris Malloy. "They did an amazing job of bouncing back from a poor day yesterday and answering the call. Now the fun part begins. Florida has a great team and we look forward to getting this thing started tomorrow"
Hugo Townsend never questioned the pressure, securing a perfect, bogey-free third-round score of 65 (-5) to lead Ole Miss in the final round and rise 30 spots on the leaderboard. The graduate transfer began the day with a birdie on Hole 1 and followed with three additional birdies in a five-hole span to give him a four-under front nine score. He remained consistent in the back nine, adding his fifth birdie of the day on Hole 16 to give him a top-10 finish at 3-under overall. Townsend's 5-under third-round performance marks a new season-best 18-hole score for the Rebel.
Sarut Vongchaisit didn't let his 2-over front nine mentally phase him as he responded with three birdies in the back nine to finish even for the day. Vongchaisit's 2-under overall score ties him in 13th place – marking his fourth top 20 finish of the season, as well as the 13th top 20 finish of his career with the Rebels.
Patton Samuels had a solid performance at the Sea Island Golf Club, going bogey-free for his final 13 holes of the day. The freshman added two birdies throughout his round to finish with a 69 (-1) third round scorecard. Samuels wrapped his debut in the stroke play portion of the SEC Championship tied for 38th at 3-over overall.
Cameron Tankersley carded two birdies in his final round but was unable to come back from bogie errors. The Dickson, Tennessee, native, still managed a top-30 finish at 1-over overall in his rookie SEC Championship appearance.
Kye Meeks reentered the lineup for the final round of stroke play and put in a round score of 76 (+6) for the day.
Heading into match play, No. 6 seed Ole Miss will face off against No. 3 seed Florida in the quarterfinals teeing off at 7:30 a.m. CT. If the Rebels are able to take down the Gators, the semifinal match will be broadcasted on SECN+ beginning at 3:00 p.m. CT.
