Track Defends Penn Relays 4x800 Title, Breaks School Records at LSU

4/29/2023 | Track and Field

Rebel Men First to Repeat as Penn Relays 4x800 Champions Since Penn State in 2012-13

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. / BATON ROUGE, La. – Ole Miss track & field became the first school in a decade to repeat as the men's 4x800-meter relay at the 127th running of the Penn Relays, while the remainder of the Rebel squad put together a strong conclusion to the outdoor regular season at the LSU Invitational on a busy Saturday of action.

At Penn, the All-American Rebel men's quartet of Cade Flatt, Shane Bracken, Tiarnan Crorken and Baylor Franklin had the unenviable task of defending a dominant Ole Miss victory in the 4x800 in 2022. Last season, the foursome of Cade Bethmann, Franklin, John Rivera Jr. and Mario Garcia Romo cruised to a four-second victory over Penn State by four seconds at 7:13.71.

But this year, the battle between the Rebels and the Nittany Lions came down to the wire. Flatt took the opening leg in 1:50.85, followed by a 1:47.04 by Bracken and a 1:46.70 by Crorken as Franklin took the baton for the anchor in third place. The All-American ripped his two laps off in 1:47.78 and brought the Rebels from third to first, as Franklin held off Penn State's Handal Roban at the line 7:12.37 to 7:12.96 – a new Ole Miss record and the fifth-fastest time in collegiate history.

Ole Miss is now the first men's team to repeat as the Penn Relays champions in the 4x800 since Penn State did so in 2012 and 2013, and the Rebels' winning time of 7:12.37 fell within two seconds of the Penn Relays record 7:11.17 set by Penn State in 1985.

The Rebel win constitutes the 11th overall Penn Relays title in school history, and the seventh in the prestigious Championship of America series alongside their 4x800 and DMR victories in 2022 and previous wins by Ralph Spry in the long jump in 1983 (26-04.25), the men's sprint medley relay of Kevin Buffington, Michael Cox, Thomas Johnson and George Kersh in 1990 (3:14.98), Pablo Sierra in the 5K in 1991 (13:51.22), and the men's 4x400-meter relay of Alonzo Banks, Jimmy Love, Savante' Stringfellow and Wayne Woolery in 1999 (3:05.19).

Down in Baton Rouge, Ole Miss came away with two more school records and a handful of NCAA caliber performances – including a powerful day across both the women's and men's hammer competitions.

All-American senior Jasmine Mitchell won the women's hammer in dominating fashion, launching an 11-foot PR of 69.58m/228-03 to best teammate Jalani Davis by five feet at her season-best 68.04m/223-02. For Mitchell, that toss moves her ahead of Davis to No. 3 on the all-time list in Ole Miss history, as well as No. 28 in the world, No. 10 in the United States, No. 3 in the NCAA, No. 2 in the East and atop the SEC leaderboards for 2023.

In the men's hammer, freshman Tarik Robinson-O'Hagan took down All-American Dempsey McGuigan's 2017 record with a runner-up heave and four-foot PR of 70.83m/232-04 – besting McGuigan's mark of 70.55m/231-05. This is the third school record for Robinson-O'Hagan in his first season as a Rebel, his first outdoors to join his indoor records in the weight throw (23.62m/77-6) and shot put (19.73m/64-08.75). This season, that throw by Robinson-O'Hagan ranks No. 13 in the United States, No. 9 in the NCAA, No. 6 in the East Region and No. 2 in the SEC.

On the track, senior Jaiden Paris rewrote her own school record in the 100-meter hurdles – the fourth straight meet she has broken either the all-conditions or wind-legal Ole Miss records in the hurdles. Today Paris finished sixth in a spectacular field at a new PR of 13.11 (+0.9), breaking her previous record of 13.16 (+1.0) set just last week at Virginia. This year, Paris now ranks No. 18 in the NCAA, No. 11 in the East Region, and No. 8 on the ultra-competitive SEC hurdles list.

The Rebel women's 4x100-meter relay put together another great outing of its own, nearly breaking the Ole Miss record with its runner-up finish. The quartet of McKenzie Long, Gabrielle Matthews, Jayda Eckford and Ariyonna Augustine passed the stick in a season-best 43.53, the second-fastest time in Ole Miss history that also puts the Rebels in the upper echelon of the nation this season at No. 9 in the NCAA, No. 7 in the East Region and No. 5 in the SEC.

Matthews wasn't done yet, however, as she improved in the 400-meter hurdles for the fourth straight meet. Matthews finished third at a new PR of 57.79, the second-fastest time in school history behind Sofie Persson's 57.23 from the 2010 European Championships. This year, Matthews currently ranks No. 32 in the NCAA, No. 21 in the East Region and No. 11 in the SEC.

Ole Miss will have next week off to rest up for the 2023 SEC Outdoor Championships, which will be held in Baton Rouge on May 11-13.
