Men’s Golf Wraps Day One of Mossy Oak Collegiate at 22-Under Overall

4/3/2023 | Men's Golf

WEST POINT, Miss. – After a delayed start time due to course conditions, Ole Miss hit the ground running on the first day of competition at the Mossy Oak Collegiate in West Point. Due to darkness, the second round of play was cut short, but Ole Miss went to the clubhouse in 4th place at 22-under overall after a largely successful first day.

Sarut Vongchaisit was the star of the show on the Mossy Oak Golf Course. In the first round, Vongchaisit started out playing steady golf in the front nine but found his rhythm in the back nine and didn't hold back. Achieving a bogey-free back nine and adding on five birdies, the Bangkok, Thailand native kept his momentum high going into the second round. Vongchaisit put in three consecutive birdies on Holes 1-3 to start out with a bang and then followed up with back-to-back birdies on Holes 6-10. One final birdie on Hole 12 capitalized the day as play was called due to darkness. The senior leads the 100-player field by one stroke at 13-under overall with 16 birdies heading into the final day of competition.

Overall, par 5 holes continue to be Ole Miss' bread and butter as the Rebels lead the 18-team field at 15-under in par 5s. Ole Miss is tied for second with 39 birdies and two eagles after the first day at Mossy Oak. Play will resume at 8 a.m. CT on Tuesday, and Round 3 will be played continuously.

"We are really close to playing great golf," head coach Chris Malloy said. "Unfortunately, we had too many silly mistakes in our first round and we dug ourselves a hole. I reminded our guys that we were in a worse position than this last week in Houston and we went out and won. We need to be tough and do the same things as last week and give ourselves a chance to win."

Hugo Townsend began the first round with a birdie on Hole 1 to jump-start his day. Townsend followed with an additional four birdies and an eagle to put him among the top players on the leaderboard heading into Round 2. Completing the front nine before the sun set, the graduate transfer put in three birdies to give a 5-under overall score and tied for 16th.

Patton Samuels had a pair of back-to-back birdies on Holes 6 and 7 to give him some momentum in the first round where put in a 71 (-1) score. Through 12 holes in Round 2, the freshman is playing steady golf going bogey-free for all 12 holes and adding on two birdies. Samuels is 3-under overall and tied for 33rd place.

Tied with Samuels is Kye Meeks, who is competing individually for Ole Miss. Meeks accomplished 15 consecutive bogey-free holes in his round while chipping in three birdies. The sophomore began his second round with a birdie on Hole 16 to finish at 3-under of the day.

Brett Schell put in two birdies in the first round and followed with two additional birdies and an eagle in Round 2 to give him a 1-under overall score. Rounding out scoring is Cameron Tankersley who finished the first day of the Mossy Oak Collegiate at 5-over overall.

Ole Miss will tee off the final day of the Mossy Oak Collegiate tomorrow morning, April 4, with an 8:00 a.m. CT shotgun start to finish Round 2 with Round 3 to be played continuously.
