Track & Field Wins Three Events to Open 2023 Joe Walker Invite

4/7/2023 | Track and Field

OXFORD, Miss. – Ole Miss track & field collected three event wins on a chilly but productive first day of the 2023 Joe Walker Invitational at the Ole Miss Track & Field Complex on Friday.

All three Rebel victories came on the track Friday night in the invitational sections of the distance races. All-American senior Baylor Franklin made his outdoor debut for 2023, winning the men's 800-meter invite at an opener of 1:48.81. Fellow All-American and current NCAA leader Tiarnan Crorken set the pace, bringing the pack through in a blazing 52.41 before hopping off the track. That time currently puts Franklin No. 23 in the NCAA, No. 9 in the East Region and No. 3 in the SEC.

Freshman Cade Flatt made his collegiate outdoor debut on Friday, taking runner-up to Franklin in the 800-meter at 1:50.60. Cole Piotrowski gave Ole Miss the top three spots at a season-best 1:50.68.

Ole Miss swept both invitational sections of the 1500-meter races, led by an impressive open by Kristel van den Berg in the women's race. Her winning time of 4:19.13 fell just one second off her career-best from 2022, and currently puts her No. 37 nationally, No. 24 regionally and No. 5 in the SEC.

In the men's 1500-meter invite, senior Dalton Hengst snagged the win at a season-best 3:45.24, while Gabe Scales clocked a PR in third place at 3:45.99.

The Rebel women received two career performances in the 800-meter invite, with senior Loral Winn recording a two-second PR of 2:06.67 and sophomore Madison Hulsey a one-second best of 2:08.45 to finish second and third, respectively. For Winn, that time moves her up to No. 6 in Ole Miss history, while Hulsey now ranks No. 12 all-time.

Senior and reigning SEC Indoor silver medalist Noah Mumme had another improvement of his own over in the men's pole vault. Mumme was the runner-up at an outdoor PR of 5.28m/17-03.75, which improves upon his slot at No. 6 in Ole Miss history while also ranking No. 24 in the NCAA, No. 9 in the East and No. 4 in the SEC.

Oxford was site of one of the world's best women's hammer competitions so far this outdoor season on Friday, where All-American senior Jasmine Mitchell was the top collegiate finisher at a career-best 66.63m/218-07. Mitchell finished behind professionals Erin Reese (73.47m/241-00) and Rebel great Janeah Stewart (70.53m/231-05), with Reese's winning toss standing as the current world lead.

For Mitchell, that one-foot PR improves upon her spot at No. 4 in Ole Miss history, and this season puts her No. 7 nationally, No. 6 regionally and No. 4 in the SEC.

Competition begins Saturday morning at 10 a.m. CT with the resumption of the men's decathlon and women's heptathlon.
