Four Rebels Shoot Under Par in Day Two of Action
NORMAN, Okla. – After the second round and 36 holes of play at the NCAA Norman Regional, Tuesday proved to be a day Ole Miss men's golf began to click as the Rebels shot an 8-under round to move up to eighth place. The round of 280 tied for the best from any team of the day. Overall, the Rebels are 3-under with 18 holes to go.
Ole Miss still remains in contention for its seventh overall trip to the NCAA Championships in Scottdale, Arizona, and its first back-to-back visit since 1985.
"I was very impressed with how our guys bounced back from yesterday's round. To come out and have the low round of the day shows the fight that this team has shown all year," said head coach Chris Malloy. "We need to get out early tomorrow and build on some momentum to get in the top five by days end. I look forward to seeing what this group has in them."
For the second day in a row, Hugo Townsend was feeling it by shooting yet another round under par at 69 (-3) highlighted by two eagles. The graduate transfer vaulted himself into the top-five on Tuesday and tied for fourth overall on the leader board.
Jumping back into the top-20 individually was Sarut Vongchaisit, with a round of 69 (-3). Five birdies propelled the senior to 2-under overall and slotted tied for 18tb.
Cameron Tankersley came out playing clean in round two, with a bogey-free first 14 holes to fire off a round of 71 (-1). Back-to-back birdies capped off his day, with the freshman now sitting in the top-50 in a tie for 46th
With a bogey-free back nine, Kye Meeks completed the round 1-under par and added two birdies. Meeks is currently 3-over through two rounds, tied for 50th.
Chipping in two birdies, Patton Samuels finished his second round 1-over at 73 to sit 6-over in the tournament. The freshman sits 60th overall.
Only the top five teams and top individual from a non-advancing team will be able to continue their season at Grayhawk Golf Club later this May in Scottsdale, Arizona.
Ole Miss begins its final round of the Norman Regional, tomorrow morning at 8:55 a.m. CT.
