Rebels Pick Up First Victory of 2023 Season

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Four Rebels finished with double-digit kills as Ole Miss volleyball and head coach Bre Henry picked up their first victory of 2023 in a five-set thriller over Lipscomb Thursday night.

Vivian Miller powered the offense, leading the Rebels with 19 kills on a .457 clip. She was followed by a trio of seniors in Anna Bair, Payton Brgoch and Sasha Ratliff who all finished with 10-plus kills. Setter Aly Borellis tied her career-high with 54 assists as she fed her attackers to a .317 mark as a team.

Defensively, the Rebels were stout, holding Lipscomb under .200 and tallied 12 blocks. Libero Cammy Niesen also had a night, flying around the backcourt for 24 digs.

The Rebels came out hot to start the match. Ratliff slammed down a couple of kills on the slide to build an early 7-2 edge. They continued to maintain the advantage as Miller and Bair helped Ole Miss cruise to a 25-18 set victory.

Lipscomb grabbed a 5-1 lead to open the second set, forcing Ole Miss to take a timeout and regroup. The Rebels battled, getting within three points on a rejection at the net by Miller and Ratliff and tying the match at 19 on a Bison attacking error. The push continued as Bair came alive late with a block and back-to-back kills to inch the Rebels closer to set point. Shayla Meyer slammed the door with a block and a kill for the final two points, giving Ole Miss a 2-0 advantage in the match.

Needing one more set to win the match, Lipscomb didn't make things easy on the Rebels. The Bison fought their way to narrow victories in sets three and four to force a decisive fifth set.

Ole Miss locked in with the match on the line in the fifth set. Miller caught fire and took matters into her own hands, recording three straight kills to give the Rebels control at 9-5. Ole Miss continued to grab all the momentum, taking advantage of Lipscomb errors, and Julia Dyess buried the final kill to help the Rebels secure their first win of the season.

The Rebels look to keep the momentum rolling on Friday when they take on Tennessee State on Day Two of the LUV Invitational at 6 p.m. CT.
