Johnson Scores Game Winner for First Collegiate Goal
ATLANTA, Ga. – Gili Johnson scored her first collegiate goal and it proved to be all that Ole Miss (3-1-1) would need to hand Georgia State (3-1-2) their first loss of the season Sunday afternoon.
The 1-0 shutout of the Panthers gives the Rebels back-to-back shutouts for the first time this season. They have now shut out opponents in three of their first five matches and have allowed just two total goals.
Ole Miss outshot Georgia State 10-9, placing six of their 10 shots on goal. Shu Ohba made two saves in her third shutout of the season, bringing her SEC leading total to 19 saves on the year.
Johnson scored for the first time in her career in the 25th minute of play. It was just the second shot of the game by either team and came after the Rebels earned a throw in deep in their attacking zone. Taylor Radecki launched the ball from the sideline all the way into the box where Brenlin Mullaney redirected it with her head to right in front of Johnson who tapped it past the goalkeeper.
Ohba made two saves before the halftime break as Ole Miss rolled into intermission with a 1-0 lead.
The Rebels held the Panthers to just four shots in the second half and none of them were placed on goal. Kelly Brady had one of the better opportunities for Ole Miss in the second half as Grace Freeman sent a cross into the box, finding the head of Brady right in front of the goal but her shot went just to the outside of the goal.
The Panthers took just one shot in the final 29 minutes of play as Ole Miss cruised to a 1-0 win.
The Rebels will be back in action in Nashville on Thursday against Lipscomb.
