Track & Field Sets National Weight Throw Leads to Open Commodore Challenge
1/12/2024 | Track and Field
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Ole Miss track & field set both the men's and women's national leads in the weight throw following an excellent first day of the season at Day One of the Commodore Challenge on Friday.
Rebel senior Jalani Davis began her title defense for the NCAA women's weight throw crown, but teammate Jasmine Mitchell grabbed the spotlight and reminded the track world that Ole Miss possesses one of the most potent one-two duos in the nation. Mitchell took the victory on her third-round toss of 24.16m/79-03.25, the second-best throw in collegiate history this early into the season – trailing only a 24.23m/79-6 from SIU's Brittany Riley on Dec. 7, 2007, who was then also under the tutelage of Ole Miss head coach Connie Price-Smith and throws coach John Smith during their time with the Salukis.
Davis opened at 23.16m/76-0 but hovered around second and third place following three fouls. A fifth-round improvement to 23.79m/78-00.75 held her stay in third before breaking the 24-meter plateau on her final attempt at 24.06m/78-11.25 – the third-best throw in collegiate history this early into the calendar behind Riley and Mitchell. Davis bested Ole Miss grad and professional thrower Janeah Stewart, who finished third at 24.04m/78-10.50.
That last effort by Davis proved historic, as it made Mitchell and Davis just the second teammate duo in collegiate history and the first within the regular season to break 24 meters in the same meet. The other duo also included Mitchell, who paired up beyond 24 meters with national champ Shey Taiwo at the 2022 NCAA Indoor Championships.
On the men's side, sophomore Tarik Robinson-O'Hagan began the follow-up to his spectacular freshman campaign with a national lead of his own. Robinson-O'Hagan's fourth-round effort of 23.12m/75-10.25 earned him the win Friday by nearly four feet, as well as a spot atop the NCAA leaderboard by nearly three feet. Last year, Robinson-O'Hagan set the collegiate freshman record with his 23.62m/77-6 from the SEC Indoor Championships.
Ole Miss also received two strong performances from sophomore Mason Hickel and junior Costen Campion. Hickel threw what would have been a PR on all four of his legal throws, his best being a monster four-foot improvement to 20.33m/66-08.50 in the third round. Campion was in similar company on all four of his legal throws, hitting his best of 19.38m/63-7 consecutively in the third and fourth rounds.
On the track, the Rebels nabbed three event titles in a solid opening to the 2024 season. Sophomore Cade Flatt, who battled through an injury-filled freshman campaign in 2023, won his first individual event as a collegian in the 600-meter. He crossed the line in a blazing 1:17.49, falling just four hundredths of a second shy of John Rivera Jr.'s record 1:17.45 from 2022.
Other wins on the track came from Tristyn Wooley in the men's 200-meter dash at an indoor PR of 21.67, and Gabe Scales in the men's 1000-meter at 2:24.64 – leading a pack of two other Rebels in the top-five in Cole Piotrowski (third, 2:25.63) and Aidan Hodge (fourth, 2:26.09).
Ole Miss also garnered a handful of runner-up finishes. Madison Hulsey took second in the 1000-meter at 2:50.64, while Jahniya Bowers (second, 39.04) and Gabrielle Matthews (third, 39.34) finished back-to-back in the women's 300-meter dash. In the men's pole vault, three Rebels tied for second at 4.98m/16-4 – Miles Walden (PR), Drew O'Connor and Logan Kelley.
Competition resumes for Ole Miss on Day Two of the Commodore Challenge at 10 a.m. CT on Saturday, beginning with the men's shot put at 10 a.m. CT.
