Shot Put Leads Way for Track & Field at Conclusion of Commodore Challenge

1/13/2024 | Track and Field

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Ole Miss men's and women's track & field put its first meet in the books with another strong day of competition at the conclusion of Vanderbilt's Commodore Challenge on Saturday.

One day after setting national leads in both the men's and women's weight throw, Ole Miss received another NCAA-leading performance on Saturday from sophomore Tarik Robinson-O'Hagan in the men's shot put. Robinson-O'Hagan, who Friday set the national lead in the men's weight, let one fly 19.58m/64-3 on his final attempt today to win by a little more than three feet and jump to the top of the NCAA shot put leaderboard at this early point of the season.

Robinson-O'Hagan earned All-America honors four times as a freshman in 2023, a season in which he became one of the best all-around freshman throwers in collegiate history. He put that versatility on display with his victory in the shot put on Saturday, opening less than six inches off his indoor career-best of 19.73m/64-08.75.

Fellow sophomore Mason Hickel had a career day alongside Robinson-O'Hagan in the shot put, finishing fourth at a PR heave of 17.25m/56-07.25 on his final attempt. That improves upon his standing at No. 7 in Ole Miss history, and combines with a career outing in the weight throw last night.

The Rebel men also nabbed two event wins on the track. Senior Deshaun Jones returned to the track in excellent shape after having to sit out the entire 2023 season following his transfer from Baylor. Jones won the 60-meter hurdles final today at 7.96, already moving him into No. 8 in Ole Miss history and making him one of just nine Rebels to ever break eight seconds in the event.

Also winning was senior middle distance specialist Marcus Dropik, who took the men's 800-meter crown at 1:49.51.

In the women's shot put, the story of the day was highly-touted freshman Mensi Stiff in her shot put debut with the Rebels. Stiff, who this past summer won a gold medal for Team USA in the shot put at the Pan American U20 Championships in Puerto Rico, led the Rebel women in third place at 17.17m/56-4 – already making her the fifth-best shot putter in Ole Miss history and placing her No. 4 in the NCAA this season. Furthermore, Stiff's toss today makes her one of just seven freshmen nationally to have thrown at least that far since 2015 – the fifth since 2022.

Senior Ryan Star and junior Tristyn Wooley gave the Rebels a good presence in the men's 60-meter dash final, with Star running a career-best 6.73 to finish third and Wooley topping out at a PR 6.81 for sixth place. For Star, that time moves him into a tie for seventh on the all-time Ole Miss performance list.

Senior Jerricka Ambus represented the Rebel women in the 60-meter hurdles final, finishing third at 8.43 – just one one-hundredth of a second off her Ole Miss career-best 8.42.

Senior McKenzie Long made her 2024 debut as well, getting a little endurance training in with an appearance in the 400-meter dash. Long – who was an All-American last season in the 60-meter and 200-meter indoors, as well as the 100-meter and 200-meter outdoors – finished fifth in the 400-meter today at a two-second PR of 55.29, good for No. 10 in Ole Miss history.

Other notable performances included a third-place finish by junior Iangelo Atkinstall-Daley in the men's triple jump (15.13m/49-07.75) and a fourth-place open for senior Samara McConnell in the women's pole vault (3.97m/13-00.25).

Ole Miss will return to Nashville next week for the Vanderbilt Invitational, which will run Jan. 19-20.
