Football Earns Way-Too-Early Top 5 Ranking

1/9/2024 | Football

OXFORD, Miss. – The Ole Miss football team finished the 2023 season ranked in the top 10 for the first time in the Lane Kiffin era, and the Rebels could be bound for an even higher preseason ranking in 2024.

With the 2023-24 college football season in the books, pundits are already looking ahead at 2024-25, releasing their Way Too Early preseason rankings for next year.

Ole Miss was ranked as high as No. 5 by Pro Football Focus and CBS Sports. The Rebels were projected No. 6 by 247Sports and No. 7 by ESPN and On3.

The official preseason polls for next season won't be released until August, but it is clear the Rebels will be an early favorite to make the expanded 12-team College Football Playoff field.

A preseason No. 5 ranking would be Ole Miss' first since 1970, when the Rebels were ranked fifth to start the year. The Rebels last started the season in the top 10 in 2009, ranking No. 8.

Several key Ole Miss players have announced their plans to return for the 2024 campaign, none bigger than quarterback Jaxson Dart, who made his return official after the Peach Bowl victory.

Additionally, Ole Miss added a top-20 freshman recruiting class, and will welcome one of the top transfer portal classes in the nation when the spring semester begins later this month.
