Meyer, Washington Not Enough for Volleyball in Loss at Georgia
10/13/2024 | Volleyball
ATHENS, Ga. – Despite 20-kill performances from Shayla Meyer and Nia Washington, the Ole Miss volleyball program was unable to complete a rally, falling 3-1 to Georgia on Sunday afternoon at Stegeman Coliseum.
Both Meyer and Washington added 11 and 12 digs apiece to record double-doubles for the Rebels (12-5, 2-3 SEC), but the Bulldogs (8-7, 2-3 SEC) emerged victorious.
In what was largely an even start to the match, the Bulldogs were able to create the first separation, largely behind several errors from the Rebels. What was an 11-11 tie, became multiple six-point leads for Georgia. Meyer and Washington pushed for a response but could get no close than four.
The lull continued into the second set, as the Rebels trailed 11-4 early. However, momentum began to swing in the visitors' favor, with Ole Miss going on an 8-1 run to tie the set. After going back-and-forth, Georgia emerged for a small lead behind a kill, ace and Ole Miss error to lead 22-18. Washington added two late kills to cut the lead to 24-23 but an Ole Miss service error ended the frame.
The Rebels brought renewed energy to the third set. Beginning with some active work at the net by Payton Brgoch, who finished with four blocks on the day. Ole Miss continued to get production from Meyer and built a 10-6 lead, before Georgia took a timeout. While Georgia was able to rally for a 19-18 lead, Ole Miss responded with some improved serving from Sommer Daniel and Tessa Jones, as well as a punctuating kill from Sasha Ratliff to win 25-22.
Momentum appeared to be on the Rebels side early on in the fourth set, as they built an 8-4 lead behind more great serving from Jones. However, the Bulldogs rallied together and responded with a crippling, 8-2 run to take the lead back for good. Despite saving three set points, the Rebels came up short, 25-20.
The Rebels continue their road swing next weekend, as they travel to Columbia, S.C., to face South Carolina on Friday at 6 p.m. CT.
