Balanced Attack Leads Volleyball to Sweep of South Carolina
10/18/2024 | Volleyball
COLUMBIA, S.C. – Behind some timely blocking and a diverse offensive game plan, the Ole Miss volleyball program earned a key SEC win, defeating South Carolina, 3-0 on Friday night at the Carolina Volleyball Center.
The Rebels (13-5, 3-3 SEC) were led by a balanced attack, with four players notching eight or more kills. Shayla Meyer and Nia Washington tallied 10 kills each, while Meyer and Julia Dyess (nine kills) recorded eight digs apiece to lead their unit over the Gamecocks (10-6, 1-4 SEC). Sasha Ratliff also set a new season-high with seven blocks.
After an even start, the Rebels began to assert their will, with some efficient play and a balanced attack. Meyer led the way with four kills, while the Rebels would earn multiple slight advantages throughout the set without letting the Gamecocks get closer. The set was ultimately clinched behind a terrific run of serve from Sommer Daniel, who guided Ole Miss from a 16-15 lead to a 20-15 advantage, tallying a service ace in the sequence. The Rebels would pull away even further, ending the set on a 10-3 run and won 25-18.
South Carolina attempted to push back, but the Rebels were not phased and built an 11-8 advantage. Meyer and Washington continued to provided timely offense, but the Gamecocks were able to tie the match at 19-19. Meyer and Dyess gave the Rebels two set points, but a serve from Elizabeth McElveen scraped the top of the net and fell to tie the set at 24-24. However, the Gamecocks turned in a pair of errors alongside a Washington kill and the Rebels emerged with a 27-25 win.
The momentum seemed to be entirely in the Rebels favor in the third set, as they built a 5-3 lead behind kills from four different Rebels. However, an 8-4 Gamecock run gave the hosts some life and put them ahead 11-9. That would be as close as South Carolina would get, as the Rebels surged back behind a 5-1 run on Meyer's serve. Ratliff took over to put the game on ice, with five kills and two blocks in the final set, as Ole Miss raced out to a 25-19 win and the sweep.
The Rebels will complete a three-match road swing on Wednesday, as they face in-state rival Mississippi State at 7 p.m. CT. The match will be televised on the SEC Network.
