Volleyball Drops Decision at Mississippi State
10/23/2024 | Volleyball
STARKVILLE, Miss. – Despite a 21-kill effort from Nia Washington, the Ole Miss volleyball program fell, 3-1 at Mississippi State on Wednesday night at the Newell-Grissom Building.
Washington led all Rebels (13-6, 3-4 SEC) with 21 kills and matched a career-high with 17 digs, while Cammy Niesen added 20 digs. Four went into double figures in kills for the Bulldogs (8-8, 2-5 SEC).
The Rebels faced early adversity in the opening set, falling behind 5-1. However, Julia Dyess and Sasha Ratliff got to work on the block, with a pair of blocks to tie the match at 5-5. It would not be the first time that the Rebels fell behind in the first set, with the Bulldogs taking three-point leads on several different occasions. However, the Rebels would not go away and chipped away at the lead on each occasion.
Mississippi State emerged with three set points, up 24-21, but kills by Shayla Meyer and Sasha Ratliff cut the lead to one. Ratliff and Washington saved the final set point on a massive block, but the Bulldogs got another set point at 25-24. The same story followed, as Ratliff and Dyess saved a fourth set point and tied the match at 25-25. With the pressure mounting, a huge call went the way of Mississippi State initially, before being reversed on a challenge by head coach Bre Henry. The Rebels would get the decisive kill on the next point from Washington to take an early lead.
However, the Bulldogs began to turn the tide in the second set, building a 13-10 advantage. The Rebels would rally back with a 7-2 run, forcing the Bulldogs into a timeout. Nevertheless, the hosts responded with an improved hitting percentage to end the set on a 10-4 run and tie the match up at 1-1.
In what proved to be a pivotal third set, both sides traded blows early with several lead changes. Ole Miss earned the early advantage, jumping out to a 12-9 lead. However, the Bulldogs chipped away and the two sides became locked at 17-17. A 7-0 run by Mississippi State proved to doom the Rebels, who could not dig out of the steep hole, despite three straight points and they would ultimately fall 25-20.
With the momentum firmly on Mississippi State's side, the hosts stormed out to a 15-6 advantage in the fourth set. With their backs against the wall, the Rebels pushed for a rally, going on an 8-3 run behind two kills and an ace from Payton Brgoch to cut the lead to 18-14. However, the Bulldogs stifled any further rally, emerging with a 25-19 win.
The Rebels return home this weekend, welcoming No. 14 Kentucky to the Gillom Center on Sunday at 2 p.m. CT.
