Second Set Rally Stifled for Volleyball Against No. 14 Kentucky

10/27/2024 | Volleyball

OXFORD, Miss. – The Ole Miss volleyball program pressed for a second-set rally, but came up short, falling 3-0 to No. 14 Kentucky on Sunday afternoon at the Gillom Center.

Payton Brgoch led the Rebels (13-7, 3-5 SEC), with a .273 hitting percentage and four total blocks, while Sasha Ratliff also added four blocks. Brooklyn DeLeye led the Wildcats (12-7, 6-2 SEC) with 17 kills.

Both sides sought early momentum, with the Rebels capitalizing on some Kentucky errors to keep the first set knotted at 11-11. However, DeLeye emerged for the Wildcats, delivering some timely kills to begin to pull away. The Wildcats would clinch the first set, 25-18, despite four service errors late in the set.

The momentum appeared to be fully in the Wildcats favor, as they built a 10-3 lead in the second set. However, the Rebels began to steady the ship and continued to benefit from shaky serving on the visiting end. The Rebels began to surge back from a 17-10 deficit, going on an 11-4 run to tie the match at 21-21. Blocking proved to be critical for the Rebels, who got five of their 11 points via a block, with Brgoch, Julia Dyess and Ratliff each factoring in on an at least two blocks. Nevertheless, the Wildcats earned two set points at 24-22, but two errors tied it 24-24. However, Kentucky would emerge with a 26-24 win.

Kentucky would put their foot on the gas in the third, building a 22-7 advantage. The Rebels made one last gasp, as Vivian Miller took the court and provided some energy with two kills, while Sommer Daniel added a service ace to cut the lead to 23-12. However, Kentucky polished off the win with a 25-13 victory.

The Rebels head back out on the road for a matchup with Auburn on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. CT.
