Jaxson Dart Named to Davey O’Brien QB Class of 2024

10/29/2024 | Football

FORT WORTH, Texas – Ole Miss senior quarterback Jaxson Dart has been named one of 35 quarterbacks nationally on the Davey O'Brien QB Class of 2024, as announced by the Davey O'Brien Foundation on Tuesday.

Each honoree is now an official candidate to win the 2024 Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award, which is presented annually to the nation's best college quarterback and is the oldest and most prestigious national quarterback award. The 35 quarterbacks have helped lead their respective teams to a combined record of 217-51 (.810), and all of their teams possess a record of .500 or better through week nine.

This is the second consecutive appearance in the Davey O'Brien QB Class for Dart, who is one of six SEC quarterbacks to make the cut alongside Georgia's Carson Beck, Texas' Quinn Ewers, Alabama's Jalen Milroe, LSU's Garrett Nussmeier and Vanderbilt's Diego Pavia.

Dart – a native of Kaysville, Utah – is in his third season as Ole Miss' starting quarterback in 2024 after transferring from USC his freshman season in 2021. In his overall career, Dart is 749-of-1,154 (64.9 percent) for 10,386 yards and 67 touchdowns with a career rushing line of 1,253 yards and 14 scores on 336 carries – making him one of five active FBS quarterbacks at 11,000 yards of total offense at 11,639.

At 24-9 as a starter, Dart is tied for the most wins of any Ole Miss quarterback of the modern era since Archie Manning's first start in 1968 with Eli Manning (24-13) and Bo Wallace (24-15). Last season, Dart led the Rebels to their first 11-win season in program history at 11-2 – capped by a Peach Bowl victory that saw him break the Ole Miss bowl game passing record at 379 yards against Penn State.

As a Rebel, Dart owns a passing line of 632-of-965 (65.5 percent) for 9,033 yards, 58 touchdowns and an efficiency rating of 160.0. His 1,210 yards and 12 touchdowns on the ground also make him one of the best rushing quarterbacks in Ole Miss history, pushing his total offense yardage to 10,243 – putting him within striking distance of Bo Wallace's all-time record of 10,478.

This season, Dart owns a passing line of 173-of-245 (70.6 percent) for 2,695 yards, 15 touchdowns, three interceptions and an efficiency rating of 180.8. On the ground, Dart owns 207 yards and three scores, pushing his total offense per game average to an SEC-leading 362.8 yards per contest. Dart also leads the FBS in yards per attempt (11.0) and simultaneously leads the SEC and ranks FBS top-10 in total offense (3rd), passing yards (3rd), passing efficiency (3rd), passing offense (4th, 336.9 ypg), yards per completion (5th, 15.6) and completion percentage (8th).

Elsewhere, Dart is a finalist for the National Football Foundation William V. Campbell Trophy, as well as a member of five national award watch lists for the Maxwell Award, Walter Camp Award, Davey O'Brien Award, Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award and the Manning Award.

The next step in the process will be to select the award's 16 semifinalists from the 35 quarterbacks. The semifinalists will be chosen based on voting from the Davey O'Brien National Selection Committee as well as bonus ballots awarded from the first round of the Davey O'Brien Fan Vote.

For the fifth straight year, the Fan Vote will take place on the award's three social media platforms — Facebook, Instagram and Twitter (X) — and the top five vote getters on each platform will receive bonus committee member ballots which will be added to the votes cast by the National Selection Committee.

To participate in the Fan Vote, fans must like the original Davey O'Brien Award (@daveyobrien) post highlighting their quarterback. First-round voting will close Fri., Nov. 8 at 11:59 p.m. (ET). The semifinalists will be named on Tues., Nov. 12. Looking ahead, the three finalists will be tabbed on Tues., Nov. 26, while the winner will be announced live on Thursday, Dec. 12, on The Home Depot College Football Awards on ESPN.

The Davey O'Brien Foundation was created in 1977, and the National Quarterback Award was first issued in 1981. Over its time, the Davey O'Brien Foundation has given away more than $1.3 million in scholarships and university grants to help high school and college athletes transform leadership on the field into leadership in life.

In 1938, O'Brien, who was a star quarterback for TCU, became the first player ever to win the Heisman Trophy, Maxwell Award and Walter Camp Award in the same year. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1955.

The 48th Annual Davey O'Brien Awards Dinner honoring the winner will be held Mon., Feb. 17, 2025, at The Fort Worth Club in Fort Worth, Texas.
