Former Men’s Golf Standouts Jackson Suber and Braden Thornberry Earn PGA TOUR Cards
10/6/2024 | Men's Golf
FRENCH LICK, Ind. – It was a historic day for Ole Miss men's golf as former Rebels Jackson Suber and Braden Thornberry made history Sunday becoming the second and third players to secure their PGA Tour cards in program history. Suber, a 24-year-old from Tampa, Florida becomes the first Rebel since Johnathan Randolph to earn a spot in the pinnacle of professional golf. Thornberry, the 27-year-old from Germantown, Tennessee claimed his first victory winning the season finale at the Korn Ferry Tour Championship, securing his spot on tour for the 2025 season.
Since starting on the pro circuit in 2022, Suber has participated in three PGA Tour events while playing on the Korn Ferry Tour. Across his 44 KFT events, Suber has made 30 cuts including eight top 10 finishes. The 2024 season has been an impressive one for Suber, making 14 cuts across his 23 events. Suber started the year strong with a T8 finish at the Astara Golf Championship presented by MasterCard back in February. He backed that performance up with a T6 finish at the LECOM Suncoast Classic after posting four rounds in the 60s.
Suber had a June to remember both on the Korn Ferry and at one of golf's greatest venues. He got the call of a lifetime in early June when he was asked to compete as an alternate in the 2024 U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2. As the last entry after earning a spot on Monday, Suber made plenty of noise sneaking in under the cut line for the first time in his career in a PGA Tour event.
He finished June with a solo second finish at the Compliance Solutions Championship and followed that finishing solo third at the Memorial Health Championship presented by LRS.
While in Oxford, Suber assisted Ole Miss to the team's second-best finish in program history at the 2022 NCAA Championships with a 14th place finish. As a senior, Suber tallied the second-highest season stroke average in school history at 69.77 and throughout his Rebel career earned two-time PING All-American accolades as well as earning 12 top five finishes throughout his career.
Since joining the tour in 2019, Thornberry has logged 104 events making 58 cuts. He had a 2024 to remember playing in 25 events, finishing inside the top 25 eight times. Thornberry's season came down to the wire as he secured his first victory on tour at the season final KFT Championship at French Lick Golf Course.
Thornberry started the day three-under in a tie for 16th. He fired a bogey-free final round of 66 to enter the club house at (-9) in a tie for second. As the final pairing came down the stretch, Thornberry slipped into the lead as he could only watch to see if a playoff awaited. Brian Campbell had a long birdie putt at the 18th to force a playoff but came up just short giving Thornberry his first KFT victory and cementing his spot on the PGA Tour in 2025.
While in Oxford, Thornberry became the most decorated men's golfer in program history with 11 tournament victories including the 2017 NCAA Championship. A two-time All-SEC First Team selection, Thornberry was the 2018 McCormack Medal Winner and the 2017 Fred Haskins Award recipient.
He spent much of his junior season (2017-18) as the No. 1 ranked amateur in the world winning four times as an individual. He averaged a 70.28 stroke-average that ranked 15th nationally and led the Rebels to another NCAA Regional appearance before qualifying for the NCAA Championships to defend his title as national champion.
In the summer of 2017, Thornberry made his PGA Tour debut at the FedEx St. Jude Classic and placed fourth, the highest amateur finisher at the FedEx St. Jude since 1965 and has the best amateur finish on the PGA Tour in 2017. That same summer he qualified for the U.S. Amateur and defeated world No. 1 Joaquin Niemann. He also became the first Rebel to play in the Walker Cup, representing the United States.
