Record-Breaking Showing for Volleyball Duo Leads Rebels to Victory Over LSU

10/6/2024 | Volleyball

OXFORD, Miss. – After a record-breaking afternoon for Nia Washington and Sasha Ratliff, Ole Miss volleyball picked up its second straight SEC win as the Rebels defeated LSU, 3-1, in front of a packed crowd at the Gillom Athletics Performance Center.

Washington put on a show for the Rebels (12-3, 2-1 SEC), tallying a career-high 28 kills, marking the fourth most in a match in program history within the rally scoring era. Also notching a .404 hitting clip, the junior accounted for 47% of Ole Miss' 59 kills on the match. In addition, Washington now owns the highest hitting percentage of any Rebel with at least 28 kills in the rally scoring era.

Early in the first set, Ratliff also achieved a significant milestone, becoming the program's all-time leader in blocks in the rally scoring era with 439. The fifth-year senior ended the afternoon with four total blocks and six kills to help propel the Rebels past the Tigers (9-6, 1-3 SEC).

The Rebels started the match blazing hot against the Tigers, holding a 15-11 lead at the media timeout behind back-to-back kills from Washington. To bring the score to 18-12 in favor of Ole Miss, Ratliff earned her 436th career block, solidifying herself as the program leader in the rally scoring era. The Tigers fought back to sit within four, but behind seven kills from Washington and Shayla Meyer's fourth kill at set point, the Rebels secured the first, 25-20.

Trading point-for-point with LSU, five early kills from Washington powered the Rebels to an 11-8 lead, forcing the Tigers to take a timeout. The red-hot Rebels continued to pile it on as back-to-back kills from Meyer and Washington extended the Rebels lead to six. Once again, the Tigers tried to make a late push, but Ole Miss put the hammer down after a massive block from Payton Brgoch to win the second set, 25-20.

Looking to stay alive, LSU took the early lead in the third set, requiring the Rebels to battle from behind. With the Tigers leading by as many as eight points at 19-11, head coach Bre Henry looked to her bench for a boost. Vivian Miller came in and quickly strung together three kills to bring Ole Miss within four, forcing LSU to regroup. The Rebels fought off set point for LSU, as Washington passed her career-high kills after breaking it just two days prior, but the Tigers came away with the set, 25-21.

The packed crowd in the Gillom Performance Center continued to rock as Ole Miss took an early 7-4 lead in the fourth set. The Tigers powered back to a 12-9 advantage, but the Rebels never faltered. Sitting behind at 17-13, the Rebels went on a commanding, 12-2 run to bring themselves to set point. After a lengthy official review on the final point, as all 887 people in attendance patiently waited for the result, the Rebels secured the decision via a Tiger attacking error to take the set, 25-19, and the match in a 3-1 decision.

Ole Miss will make a quick turnaround and prepare to host Texas A&M on Oct. 9 at 6:30 p.m. CT for Party in the 'Sip Night.
