Volleyball Drops Matchup Against Texas A&M

10/9/2024 | Volleyball

OXFORD, Miss. – The Ole Miss volleyball program saw its six-match winning streak at Gillom Athletic Performance Center come to an end, falling in a tight, 3-1 decision to Texas A&M on Wednesday night.

Nia Washington led the way for the Rebels (12-4, 2-2 SEC) with 14 kills and 11 digs, who managed to hold the Aggies (12-2, 3-1 SEC) to only a .238 hitting percentage but could not hold them off.

Texas A&M opened the match strong, securing an early 8-2 lead to force Ole Miss to take a timeout. After regrouping, Payton Brgoch and Shayla Meyer stepped up, tallying two swings apiece to cut the Aggie lead. However, the Rebels were unable to erase the deficit, as the Aggies ran away with the set, 25-17.

Determined to flip the momentum back, Ole Miss broke away after a close start with a 7-1 run, including three straight aces from Meyer to take the 12-5 lead. In the back-and-forth affair, Texas A&M would claw back to as close as five, but Ole Miss never relinquished the lead. A 4-1 run by the Rebels, backed by two kills from Nia Washington, clinched a 25-17 set victory and evened the match up at 1-1.

Both teams played a tight third set, looking to secure the advantage. Ole Miss and Texas A&M exchanged four ties early in the set, but the Aggies started to pull away, taking advantage of a few Rebel errors. Sitting at 12-8, Washington notched a pair of kills to try and propel Ole Miss back into contention, but unfortunately Texas A&M responded, powering itself to a 25-18 set victory.

Fired up after taking the lead, Texas A&M came out hot in the fourth, forcing Ole Miss to call both of their timeouts early. Looking to her bench, head coach Bre Henry brought in Emma Ammerman to hopefully spark the Rebels back from their 11-5 deficit. The Pepperdine transfer brought some needed energy to Rebels as she strung together three quick kills, but it wouldn't be enough as the Aggies clinched the match after a 25-18 set win.

The Rebels are back in action this weekend, traveling to Athens, Ga., to face Georgia on Sunday at 12 p.m. CT. The match will be televised on the SEC Network.
