Men’s Golf in Firm Control after Day One at Hamptons Intercollegiate

EAST HAMPTON, N.Y. – Through one and a half rounds in the Empire State, Ole Miss men’s golf finds themselves in firm control of the lead at the Hamptons Intercollegiate. Round two play was suspended at 6:30 p.m. ET due to darkness.
Scoring conditions were difficult Monday morning as wind and rain played a factor in East Hampton. The Rebels weathered the storm and managed the only under par team score at (-3) after round one. Junior Michael La Sasso jumped out to the early lead carding a (-4) 68 in his opening round. La Sasso shot 34 coming in, with three birdies and an eagle on the par-5 15th.
“I’m really proud of the fight these guys showed after our start today” said head coach Chris Malloy. “We didn’t do a very good job handling the rain and wind right out of the gates. However, they really rallied and played great the rest of the day. Now we need to continue to keep the pedal down and finish strong.”

Cameron Tankersley also recorded red figures in round one with a (-1) 71. Tankersley battled back after a (+1) 38 on his first nine with four consecutive birdies on his back nine.
Kye Meeks was steady in round one shooting an even par 72. The senior from Walnut, Mississippi carded five birdies in his opening round, taking advantage of the gettable par 3s.
Cohen Trolio and Tom Fischer both grinded out finishes in their opening rounds with Trolio recording a (+2) 74, while Fischer shot (+3) 75.
In his first collegiate tournament competing as an individual, freshman Davis Gochenouer hung tough carding a (+5) 77. After a tough start, the rookie from Dayton, Ohio responded with four birdies to close out his opening round.
Round two will resume Tuesday morning at 8:10 a.m. Players will continue to the third round with the same groups.
