Niesen’s Record Setting Night Powers Volleyball to Win Over Arkansas

11/15/2024 | Volleyball

OXFORD, Miss. – Behind a record-setting performance from Cammy Niesen, the Ole Miss volleyball program earned a critical SEC victory, defeating Arkansas, 3-1 on Friday night at the Gillom Athletic Performance Center.

Niesen set a program record with 39 digs, besting the previous high across all eras of volleyball of 37, beating Ashley Veach (2012 vs. Xavier), Morgan Springer (2010 vs. Southern Miss) and Michelle Witby-York (1990 vs. Mississippi State).

Niesen's night helped propel the Rebels (15-9, 5-7 SEC) to victory, while Nia Washington led the offense with 18 kills and 12 digs. The Razorbacks (16-8, 6-6 SEC), were led by Aniya Madkin and Olivia Ruy, who each tallied 12 kills.

Despite the final result, the Rebels got off to a slow start and fell into an early 11-7 hole. Service errors plagued the Rebels, who couldn't get any offensive momentum in the opening set, as the Arkansas lead ballooned to 22-13. Emma Ammerman and Washington each got a quality swing to end the set, but the Razorbacks emerged with a 25-16 win.

However, the Rebels came out of the break with renewed energy and jumped on the visitors with a 5-2 start. The lead continued to expand, as Mokihana Tufono got involved in all facets of the game, tallying a kill, a service ace and several assists to make it 10-4. After Arkansas cut the lead to 18-15, the Rebels closed the door with a 7-4 run, as the Rebels diversified the attack with kills from Washington, Ammerman, Payton Brgoch and Shayla Meyer.

Momentum was securely in the Rebels favor, who continued their hot run of play with an early 10-4 lead. In a match that began with errors for the home side, the tide turned to the Razorbacks committing numerous errors, while Washington continued to stack kills. Tufono also jumped back into the offensive game with back-to-back kills to extend the lead to 19-10. Trading points the rest of the way, the Rebels breezed to a 25-16 win.

With their backs against the wall, the Razorbacks had an answer, as they built an 8-3 lead and forced Ole Miss into an early timeout. The Rebels regrouped and responded, with two kills from Meyer and another from Washington out of the timeout. Nevertheless, Arkansas held a 13-9 advantage. The Rebels surged back into the set with a 7-2 run, as the set began to go down to the wire. With Arkansas leading 20-18, the Rebels unearthed another 7-1 run, as Meyer took over with a kill and two aces to clinch the match.

The Rebels are back in action at the Gillom Center on Sunday, hosting Mississippi State at 12 p.m. CT, as the program honors its seven seniors. The match will be televised on the SEC Network.
