Washington Ties Rally Scoring Kills Record in Comeback Win Over Mississippi State

11/17/2024 | Volleyball

OXFORD, Miss. – Junior Nia Washington tallied a career-high 32 kills to help power a comeback win on senior day for Ole Miss Volleyball, downing Mississippi State, 3-2 on Sunday afternoon at the Gillom Athletic Performance Center.

Washington's total tied the rally scoring record for kills in match, matching Emily Stroup in 2018 at LSU. The program's all-time record is held by Mary Ahern, who recorded 33 kills against Florida in 1989.

Washington also tallied 10 digs as one of four Rebels to reach double digit digs. Mokihana Tufono added a career-high 56 assists alongside 11 digs, while Cammy Niesen added another 29 digs for the Rebels (16-9, 6-7 SEC). Payton Brgoch paced the defense with eight total blocks, moving into second all-time in total blocks in the rally scoring era. Three different players recorded 14 kills to lead the Bulldogs (10-12, 4-9 SEC) offense.

In a rematch of an October loss, the Rebels were eager to respond early, as both teams found themselves hitting at high clips in the opening set. Each team hit .429 in the frame, with Ole Miss building an 18-15 advantage. Washington and Emma Ammerman continued to swing well, putting the Rebels in position to secure the first set, but the Bulldogs rallied with five straight points to doom the hosts and win 25-22.

The Rebels looked for a quick answer, but were kept at bay for the first several points as the Bulldogs took a 10-9 lead. Sasha Ratliff sparked a rally for the Rebels with a kill that unlocked the offense, as the Rebels went on a 10-3 run to take a 19-13 lead. The Bulldogs were able to whittle the lead down to three, but Ratliff finished what she started with a punctuation mark to clinch a 25-19 win.

The Bulldogs began to tighten the strings on the Rebels attack and built a similar 10-9 advantage. After trading more points, the Bulldogs caught some momentum off a kill by Karli Schmidt to tie the match and ultimately spark a 5-1 run to lead 19-15. Needing a similar spark, coach Bre Henry turned to Vivian Miller who added a kill off the bench and led the Rebels back to 19-19. The two sides fought to the end, forcing the set to 28-28. However, despite 11 kills in the set by Washington, the Rebels came up short, 30-28.

After facing a similar, 2-1 deficit in October, the Rebels were up to the task in the second meeting with Mississippi State and jumped all over the Bulldogs to build a 13-7 lead. Washington continued her torrid pace, adding four more kills in the start alone. The lead continued to balloon, as the Bulldogs could not string together points and fell in a 19-12 hole. Some mistakes cost the Rebels late in the set, but Washington settled the group down with an emphatic kill to force a fifth set and a 25-21 set win.

The two sides traded the first six points, before the Rebels broke through. Washington delivered the kill to tie the set at 3-3, before promptly recording a service ace to spark a 5-0 run and an 8-3 advantage for the Rebels. Three straight points from the Bulldogs created nervy fans in the Gillom Center, but Washington would not be denied, registering three more kills to pull away and win the fifth set, 15-11.

The Rebels will take the floor at the Gillom Center for the final time in 2024, hosting No. 25 Missouri on Friday, November 22 at 6:30 p.m. CT.
