Volleyball Falls in Five-Set Heartbreaker to No. 25 Missouri
11/22/2024 | Volleyball
OXFORD, Miss. – Despite another vintage performance from Cammy Niesen, the Ole Miss volleyball program dropped a 3-2 heartbreaker to No. 25 Missouri on Friday night at the Gillom Athletic Performance Center.
Niesen led the Rebels (16-10, 6-8 SEC) with 33 digs, as the hosts recorded a season-high 90 digs as a unit. Nia Washington led the offense with 14 kills and 10 digs, while Mokihana Tufono added 46 assists and 18 digs. Mychael Vernon led all hitters with 18 kills to lead Missouri (19-6, 10-3 SEC).
Friday's matchup proved to be a deliberate affair, with both defenses holding their respective opponents to low hitting percentages. Ole Miss built an early 9-7 advantage, with eight of the first 16 points coming off hitting or service errors. The two sides would trade blows throughout the opening frame in a set that featured eight lead changes and 12 ties. Some strong serving by Emma Ammerman helped lead to a Washington kill and a service ace to put Ole Miss up 18-15. However, the visitors responded to adversity, rattling off a 9-0 run to stamp out an eventual 25-19 win.
The Rebels didn't let the run impact their confidence and largely kept the Tigers at arms-length throughout the second set. After opening with a 12-12 tie, the Rebels defense turned it up a notch, while Shayla Meyer added a timely kill to spark a 6-0 run and give Ole Miss the 18-12 lead. Meyer and Ammerman had their number called for much of the remainder of the set, with each adding a pair of kills as they took the set 25-21.
With the crowd behind them, the Rebels surged in the third set, building an early lead. Payton Bgroch got into sync with Tufono and provided a difficult look for the Tigers to stop, tallying four early kills to build a 14-7 lead. Anytime the Tigers strung together a few points, the Rebels defense locked in, allowing them no closer than four points back. Ammerman added three more kills, while the Rebels forced Missouri into numerous mistakes, as they clinched the third set, 25-16.
However, the experienced Tigers lineup had a response with their backs against the wall, building a 6-3 lead that would only balloon to 12-6. Washington added a pair of kills to push the Rebels back to 15-13, but the Tigers locked down the set with a 7-1 run and ultimately took the fourth, 25-16.
With the match coming down to the fifth set, the Tigers jumped out to a 4-1 lead on three hitting errors by the Rebels. Coach Bre Henry turned to her spark plug off the bench in Vivian Miller, who created some life with a kill and brought the match back to 5-5. Missouri would rebuild the advantage to 13-9, before a kill by Meyer and a block from Tufono and Sasha Ratliff made it 13-11. However, the run would stop there, as Missouri secured the last two points necessary to win 15-11.
The Rebels are back in action for the penultimate regular season matchup on Sunday, traveling to face Alabama for a 2 p.m. CT matchup.
