Volleyball Earns Gritty Road Win at Alabama
11/24/2024 | Volleyball
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Behind a season-high 16.5 team blocks, the Ole Miss volleyball program earned a gritty, 3-2 victory at Alabama on Sunday afternoon at the Foster Auditorium.
Nia Washington led all Rebels (17-10, 7-8 SEC), with 18 kills and 11 digs, while Payton Brgoch added nine total blocks to lead a highly-effective blocking unit. The Rebels defense helped limit the Crimson Tide (11-15, 3-12 SEC) to a .120 hitting percentage.
Sasha Ratliff also made history, reaching 100 blocks on the season. It's the fourth time she's accomplished the feat, before just the second Rebel with at least 100 blocks in four different seasons joining Julie Link from 1983-86. Additionally, Mokihana Tufono crossed the 1,000-assist threshold this season, becoming the first Rebel to do so since 2021.
Sunday got off a somewhat sluggish start, with the Rebels falling in 4-1 and 9-6 holes to open the first set. However, the Rebels began to diversify the attack, with kills from Emma Ammerman, Shayla Meyer and Ratliff. From there, a critical 4-0 run helped the Rebels break out in front, as Bailee Middleton delivered a strong sequence of serving, headlined by an ace and gave Ole Miss a 19-16 lead. Kills by Washington and Ammerman helped seal the 25-22 opening set win, putting momentum in the Rebels favor.
The Rebels exerted their will in the second set, jumping all over the Crimson Tide and building a 12-6 lead. Ole Miss hit .400 in the set, making only three errors, while forcing Alabama into a negative hitting percentage. Ratliff was a factor on all both sides of the court, adding three kills and two blocks, while Brgoch surged for five blocks as the Rebels pounded the Crimson Tide, 25-13.
However, play got sloppier and the Crimson Tide creeped back into the match. Alabama surged to a 10-5 lead and expanded it further to 16-9. The Rebels continued to find success through the middle with attacks from Brgoch and Ratliff, but the Tide would stifle any opportunities to come back and took the third set, 25-20.
Looking to put the match away, the Rebels stared the fourth with a more controlled attack and saw early results, as they built a 10-7 lead. Washington and Julia Dyess expanded it further to 15-11, but the Crimson Tide did not let up. An immediate 6-1 run by Alabama swung momentum back to the home side. The run expanded to 13-4, as the Tide took control and forced a fifth set with a 25-20 win.
Entering their fourth five-setter in the last five matches, the Rebels brought experience with their backs against the wall. A kill by Ratliff and an ace by Meyer set the tone early, as both sides remained close. After a kill by Brgoch, a net-scraping ace by Middleton helped give the team a jolt, as they ultimately took an 8-6 advantage at the changeover. Washington and Dyess would provide some of their best swings of the match following the break, with multiple kills from each, before an emphatic swing by Washington capped off the 15-9 win.
The Rebels will wrap up the 2024 regular season next weekend, traveling to No. 14 Texas for the first SEC clash between the two side. The match is set for Friday, November 30 at 11 a.m. CT.
