Volleyball Outlasted in Thriller at No. 14 Texas

11/30/2024 | Volleyball

AUSTIN, Texas – In a match separated by mere inches, the Ole Miss volleyball program dropped a narrow, 3-2 decision at No. 14 Texas on Saturday afternoon at Gregory Gymnasium.

Nia Washington led all Rebels (17-11, 7-9 SEC) with 30 kills and 10 digs, while Mokihana Tufono finished with a career-high 59 assists. Emma Ammerman also added 15 kills, good for her most in a Rebel uniform, while Shayla Meyer added a double-double of 16 kills and 14 digs. Devin Kahahawai led the Longhorns (18-6, 13-3 SEC) with 19 kills.

Tufono's 59 assists rank as the fourth-highest total in program history in the rally scoring era. Additionally, Washington's 30 kills are tied for the fourth most in the rally scoring era in a single match, and her second, 30 or more kill match of the season.

In the final match of the regular season before postseason play, the Rebels and Longhorns came out with energy in the opening set, in front of a raucous crowd. Each side hit over .350 in the opening frame, as Washington tallied nine kills in first set alone. Nevertheless, the Longhorns held multiple, two-point leads throughout the first set and pushed the lead to 21-18. Two kills by Washington and another by Payton Brgoch helped save a set point and generate their own. Texas rallied for two straight points to get their own chance to clinch, but a kill by Washington saved their second set point of the frame. Two errors by Texas were ultimately enough for the Rebels to clinch the opening set, 28-26.

The theme of tight sets would continue the entire afternoon, as the Rebels and Longhorns quickly matched each other in the second set. Washington added three more kills to help Ole Miss build a 9-6 lead, but Texas was able to push it back to 12-11. Ole Miss would respond with a 5-1 run to take a 17-12 lead and appeared poised to take a commanding 2-0 lead. However, Texas stayed close, but gave Ole Miss a chance to clinch at 24-22 with a service error. Back-to-back-to-back kills from Texas saved two set points and gave them one of their own, but Meyer responded with a kill to tie it at 25-25. However, the Longhorns managed to take the next two points and tie the match at 1-1.

Texas would seek to take control of the match, opening the third set on an 8-4 run. Ole Miss would not be deterred, with back-to-back kills from Meyer to push back into the set and ultimately recover for a 10-9 lead. Texas would jump back in front shortly thereafter, holding steady between a three-to-four-point advantage and ultimately held a 23-19 lead. Washington attempted to will the Rebels back into the set, recording three kills over a 4-0 run to tie the match at 23-23. However, Texas eked out a 25-23 win, putting them up 2-1.

Needing a response in a hostile road environment against a top-15 opponent, the Rebels proved to be up to the task in the fourth set. An Ammerman kill, followed by strong serving, helped Ole Miss open with a 6-3 lead. Texas would push back to take an 11-10 lead, but the Rebels got two more kills from Ammerman to surge back to a 14-11 lead. Both sides traded blows the remainder of the set, emerging tied at 21-21. With the match on the line, Washington added two timely kills, followed by a service ace from Bailee Middleton and a kill by Sasha Ratliff to take the fourth set, 25-21.

Entering a fifth set for the fourth consecutive match and fifth time in the last six, the Rebels found themselves in familiar territory. The set opened in dreamlike fashion, with another ace from Middleton and multiple kills from Ammerman to take a 5-1 lead. The Rebels maintained control of the set for much of it, building an 8-3 lead and held off a Longhorn run to extend it to 13-7. Texas rattled off three straight points, but Shayla Meyer gave the Rebels match point at 14-10. However, the Longhorns saved three match points and tied it at 14-14 on a block. Washington tallied her 30th kill of the day to get another match point, but the momentum was too far in the Longhorns favor, as they answered with three consecutive points to win 17-15.

The Rebels will now await their postseason fate, with the 2024 NCAA Tournament selection show slated for Sunday, December 1 at 5 p.m. CT and will be streamed on ESPN.
