Football at Florida: Series Snapshot

OXFORD, Miss. – The No. 9 Ole Miss football team heads to Gainesville this weekend for its final road trip of the 2024 regular season.

Click here for our first look at this year's matchup on the field, and scroll on for a look back at the series history between the Rebels and Gators, including the lone meeting of the Lane Kiffin era, his debut as the Ole Miss head coach in 2020.

Series Snapshot
This is the 26th meeting all-time between Ole Miss and Florida, as the two teams have played to a 12-12-1 tie through 25 meetings, dating back to 1926. Ole Miss won the first-ever meeting in Gainesville in 1926 and held a 7-1-1 advantage through the first nine meetings from 1926-58. Florida went on an 8-2 run through the 1990s, and the teams have split six games this century.

Series in Gainesville
Ole Miss leads the all-time series in Gainesville at 6-4-1, including a 2-1 record since the year 2000. Perhaps the most memorable trip to The Swamp came in 2008, when the Rebels stunned No. 4 Florida. At the end of a back-and-forth affair, Kentrell Lockett blocked a Gator extra point attempt to spell the difference in a 31-30 win. Marcus Temple halted Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow on 4th-and-1 to end it, prompting Tebow's iconic, "The Promise" speech. The Gators reeled off 10 straight victories, no team coming within single digits, and won the national title.

Last Meeting in Gainesville
The last trip to Gainesville for Ole Miss was an unfriendly trip. The Rebels brought at No. 3 ranking to Ben Hill Griffin Stadium but never could get going as Will Grier threw four touchdowns to lead the Gators. Ole Miss couldn't overcome a slow offensive start, falling behind 25-0 at halftime of a 38-10 defeat.

Last Meeting
Ole Miss last played Florida in 2020 in Kiffin's first game as head coach of the Rebels. Florida was a heavy favorite, bringing a No. 5 ranking to Vaught-Hemingway Stadium. The Ole Miss defense had no answer for the lethal passing duo of Kyle Trask (30-for-42, 416 yards, 6 TDs) and Kyle Pitts (8 catches, 170 yards, 4 TDs) in a 51-35 defeat, though the performances of Matt Corral (22-for-31, 445 total yards, 3 TDs) and Elijah Moore (10 catches, 227 yards), gave Rebel fans a glimpse of the offensive success to come in the Kiffin era.

Coaching Connections
Lane Kiffin and Charlie Weis Jr. worked with Florida head coach Billy Napier at Alabama. Napier was the wide receivers coach (2013-16), Weis an offensive analyst (2015-16) and Kiffin the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach (2014-16). They all moved on after 2016—Napier went on to be the offensive coordinator at Arizona State before earning the head coaching job at Louisiana, while Kiffin and Weis went to Florida Atlantic, then Ole Miss.
