11/27/2024 | Women's Basketball
NASSAU, Bahamas – Despite a strong second half showing, No. 18/18 Ole Miss women's basketball dropped its matchup against No. 1/2 UConn, 73-60, in the title round of the Continental Tire Baha Mar Championship on Wednesday night.
The Rebels (4-2, 0-0 SEC) found themselves in a 19-point hole at halftime, but ignited in the third quarter. Ole Miss outscored UConn (6-0, 0-0 Big East) 42-36 in the second half, fueled by 28 points in the third. The Rebels became the first team this season to reach the 60-point mark against the Huskies, but fell short of tying the program's largest halftime comeback.
The Rebels held the Huskies to its worst three-point shooting night of the season. UConn went 3-14 from deep, a single game low in both three-pointers made and three-point percentage (.241).
Ole Miss also forced UConn into its first negative assist-to-turnover ratio of the season and its first in 15 games dating back to the 2023-24 season. The Huskies entered tonight's game ranked No. 2 nationally in that category, but committed 18 turnovers to only 15 assists. Its assist total is a season-low while its turnover total is a season high.
KK Deans and Kennedy Todd-Williams led the Rebels with 17 and 13 points, respectively. Deans scored 12 of her points in the third quarter alone, the most by a Rebel in a single quarter this season.
Todd-Williams had the best shooting night of her Ole Miss career, going 4-4 from beyond the arc, tying a career high in three-pointers in the process. The last time she hit four three-pointers in a game was on Dec. 11, 2022, against Wofford as a player for North Carolina. It marks the most Todd-Williams has made in a Rebel uniform, and it's the second time this season she's set her personal Ole Miss high. Additionally, she tied Deans for the most three-pointers made by an individual Rebel in a single game this season.
Deans and Todd-Williams represented Ole Miss as members of the Continental Tire Baha Mar Championship All-Tournament Team. They scored a combined 32 and 30 points, respectively, in Ole Miss' two contests for the week.
Madison Scott had a personal season-high in rebounds with seven, while reaching double-figure scoring for the third time this season. Starr Jacobs scored 11 points for the Rebels and contributed six rebounds of her own, five of which were on the offensive side.
The Rebels came out for the second half down 19 but fought to stay alive, scoring 13 points, including three triples, in the opening three minutes of the half to bring the score within 10. Ole Miss clawed its way back into the game after Deans scored a season-best quarter total of 12 points, as the Rebels forced eight turnovers in the early minutes of the half. The Rebels found themselves within six points of the lead after outscoring the Huskies 28-15 in the third quarter.
Trailing 52-46, Ole Miss had life entering the fourth quarter. UConn would score quickly, converting a three-point play and a jumper in the paint within the first minute of the fourth. Todd-Williams brought the score back to within reach with her fourth three-pointer of the night, but UConn would score two quick layups in a row to bring the lead back to double digits. The Rebels continued to score, including five quick points from Tameiya Sadler, but UConn answered back with each bucket until ultimately fashioning the final score of 73-60.
The Rebels return stateside for the rest of the season and will be back at the SJB Pavilion in Oxford on Saturday, Nov. 30, for a matchup against Alabama State at 2 p.m. CT.
