Program Record Four Rebels Earn AVCA All-South Region Honors

12/10/2024 | Volleyball

OXFORD, Miss. – For the first time in Ole Miss volleyball history, four members of the program have earned American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-South Region honors, as the organization announced on Tuesday.

Leading the way were All-South Region honors for junior setter Mokihana Tufono and junior outside hitter Nia Washington. Additionally, senior middle blocker Payton Brgoch and junior libero Cammy Niesen earned All-South Region honorable mention honors. The quartet brings Ole Miss to 16 AVCA All-Region honorees in program history.

All four earn AVCA honors for the first time in their careers and are the first Rebels to get All-Region honors since Anna Bair and Sasha Ratliff in 2022. It's only the third time in program history that two have been selected to the first team in the same year and is the first time four have taken home an honor in one year, besting 2021's three winners in Bair, Ratliff and Kylee McLaughlin.

Washington adds another honor to her growing list of achievements, after taking home All-SEC honors just days ago. The New Orleans, Louisiana native finished with a career-high 445 kills, 222 digs, 49 total blocks and 29 service aces on the season. Washington's 445 kills rank as the third-highest single season total at Ole Miss in the rally scoring era and her 32-kill performance against Mississippi State tied the program's rally scoring record for a single match.

Stepping into the setter role following her arrival as a transfer this past offseason, Mokihana Tufono made waves in her first season in Oxford and earns AVCA honors for the first time. The Aiea, Hawaii, native led the SEC with 1,173 assists, while adding 286 digs, 60 blocks, 43 kills and 21 service aces. Tufono recorded an NCAA program-record 59 assists in the NCAA Tournament win over No. 21 Florida State, matching a career-high also accomplished at No. 14 Texas.

Graduating as one of the top blockers in program history, Brgoch earns her first honorable mention distinction, following a record-breaking season. The Parker, Colorado, native broke the program's single-season total blocks record in the rally scoring era, recording 134 on the year, alongside 252 kills. Brgoch made her final postseason run count, recording the match-winning kill to cap off a career-high 19-kill performance in the win over No. 21 Florida State at the NCAA Tournament for the program's first tournament victory.

After being named the SEC's Scholar Athlete of the Year, Niesen earns honorable mention honors for the first time. The Cincinnati, Ohio native continues her climb up the all-time digs list at Ole Miss with a career-year, recording 537 digs to average 4.48 per set. Her single season total was the second most by a Rebel in the rally scoring era and the third most across all eras, behind only Tara Langley (2007) and Nicole Purcell (2019). Niesen moved into sole possession of third place on the Rebels all-time digs list and will seek the all-time record next season.
