Magical Season Ends for Volleyball in NCAA Second Round

12/6/2024 | Volleyball

OMAHA, Neb. – Despite a highly competitive start to the match, the Ole Miss volleyball program was unable to complete a comeback, falling 3-0 to No. 6 Creighton in the second round of the 2024 NCAA Tournament on Friday night.

Nia Washington led the Rebels (18-12, 7-9 SEC) with 11 kills, while Emma Ammerman added nine kills and three blocks. Additionally, Payton Brgoch made history, setting the program's rally scoring record for total blocks in a single season, recording six on the night and 134 on the season, breaking Nakeyta Clair's record of 130 set in 2013. Elise Goetzinger led the Bluejays (31-2, 18-0 Big East) with 12 kills.

In front of a raucous, 2,665-person and D.J. Sokol Arena record crowd in Omaha, the Rebels and Bluejays found themselves in a tight battle from the start. Looking for strong serving from the start, Sommer Daniel helped provide it, with a key run of serve following a Washington kill, as she delivered a service ace and sparked a 3-0 run to lead 11-9. The Bluejays responded with a 5-1 run to take a 14-12 lead, but the Rebels did not quit, as Washington helped deliver on two blocks to spring Ole Miss ahead 16-14.

Back-and-forth the two teams went as both sides battled the pressure. Creighton got some late momentum to jump ahead 24-22 and gain set points. A service error helped make up one point, before Ammerman delivered a swing that was initially called out. However, a challenge by head coach Bre Henry revealed a touch, tying the match at 24-24. The Rebels gained their first set point at 25-24, but were thwarted. Creighton would get two more set point opportunities, before finally converting to win the set, 28-26.

Despite a quick, 3-0 start for Creighton, the Rebels did not let the set loss deter them, jumping ahead 8-6. Washington and Sasha Ratliff found their swing, combining for five kills. Both sides continued to trade points, as Ammerman and Washington added more kills. Trailing 20-19, the Rebels got a kill by Ratliff and back-to-back blocks from Brgoch, Tufono and Julia Dyess to lead 21-20. After trading points on serve, the Bluejays got their first set point at 24-23, but Shayla Meyer delivered a kill to save it. Ammerman saved another set point with an emphatic swing, but the Bluejays finally converted on their third chance to take the set, 27-25.

Following yet another narrow set, the Bluejays began to assert their will. The hosts opened the third set on a 15-1 run, which took the wind out of the sails of the visitors. Brgoch and Washington added some kills to stop the run, but the Bluejays were ultimately able to finish off the third set win.
