Men’s Tennis Drops Hard Fought Battle to Memphis
2/10/2024 | Men's Tennis
OXFORD, Miss. - The Ole Miss men's tennis team (4-3, 0-0 SEC) remains undefeated in securing the doubles points despite not being able to knock down the Memphis Tigers (7-2, 1-0 AAC). Although there were many tight duals between the Rebels and Tigers, Ole Miss fell 5-2 at the William F. Galtney Indoor Tennis Center on Saturday night.
The Rebels gave an electric start to the match when the No. 1 doubles duo of Nikola Slavic and Lukas Engelhardt defeated their 38th-ranked opponent, Pablo Alemany and Charlie Barry, 6-3. Falling short, Isac Stromberg and Brice Patoux took a loss on court two, forcing pressure to the No. 3 doubles.
Carson Baker and John Hallquist Lithen did not give up any hustle, securing the doubles point for the Rebels after a 6-4 finish. The tandem of Baker and Lithen is a perfect 7-0 when paired together, and they have now clinched five doubles points for the Rebels.
In singles, Patoux made a statement after grabbing the lone singles victory for the Rebels at the No. 5 slot in a 6-3, 7-5, fight to the finish. The Tigers started to gain some momentum after Lithen dropped court two 6-4, 6-4, against Conor Gannon and Engelhardt lost 7-6, 6-2, on court four.
Through a long-fought battle Slavic put up a compelling fight, but fell short in three sets, 3-6, 7-6 (7-2), 6-2. It all came down to the wire with the Rebels needing courts three and six to win, but ultimately the Rebels rang unsuccessful after Stromberg and Baker dropped their close matchups, 4-6, 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (7-1), and 6-7 (6-8), 6-2, 6-3, respectively.
The Rebels will have a two week break before heading on the road again to New Orleans, La. where Ole Miss will face Tulane Feb. 23 at 1 p.m. directly followed by a clash against New Orleans Feb. 25 at 12 p.m.
