Track & Field Notches Top-Five Team Finishes to Conclude 2024 SEC Indoor Championships
2/24/2024 | Track and Field
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Ole Miss men's and women's track & field both finished with impressive top-five team finishes amid some of the best competition on the planet to conclude its stay at the 2024 SEC Indoor Championships on Saturday.
The No. 14 Rebel women tallied 52.5 meet points, which included wins over higher ranked teams like No. 13 Georgia (sixth, 47) and No. 12 Alabama (ninth, 35). The unranked Ole Miss men shook up the formchart in a big way, scoring 42 points to finish a half-point behind No. 16 South Carolina for fourth. The Rebel men also beat out several ranked teams such as No. 11 Kentucky (sixth, 41.5), No. 12 Georgia (seventh, 38) and No. 9 Alabama (10th, 31). Only Arkansas, Florida and Texas A&M were able to place both men's and women's teams within the top-five this season.
This is the third straight top-five SEC Indoor finish for the Rebel women, who only had one such finish in their entire history prior to 2022 with a fifth-place finish in 2017 – giving all four top-five finishes to ninth-year head coach Connie Price-Smith. Combined, this is just the third time in Ole Miss history that both squads have finished top-five simultaneously – again, with all three under the watch of Price-Smith.
A large part of this weekend's success was due to throwers Jalani Davis and Tarik Robinson-O'Hagan, who together put together a historic string of performances on Friday and Saturday. Both swept their respective throwing events – the weight throw on Friday and the shot put on Saturday – making Ole Miss just the second school in SEC history to sweep all four. Only South Carolina had done so prior in 1996, the first year of collegiate weight throw competition for women.
At 20 points apiece, both were also named winners of the SEC's Cliff Harper Trophy, which is awarded annually to the top point scorers in the men's and women's competition. Davis took the women's award outright with her 20 points following wins in the weight and shot, making her only the third Rebel woman to ever win alongside four-time Olympian Brittney Reese in 2008 (outright win, 31 points) and All-American great Janeah Stewart in 2018 (four-way tie, 18 points).
Robinson-O'Hagan, meanwhile, tied for the men's win with Arkansas' Peter Maru. He is the fourth Rebel to win, the first since Ryan Walling in 2016 (tied, 20 points), and his 20 points are the most by a Rebel men's athlete since Ricky Robertson tallied 20 and won the award in 2012.
This marks the first time Ole Miss has won at least a share of each award in the same season, and the first time the same school has done so conference-wide since Florida in 2019.
Robinson-O'Hagan's win in the shot put not only was historic, but came with high drama as well. He entered the final ranked third at 19.59m/64-03.25, but in the fifth round he took the lead in bombastic fashion, uncorking a near two-foot PR of 20.38m/66-10.50. No one could crack that in the next round before his sixth attempt foul, but because he entered the final ranked third he didn't have the luxury of having the last throw – meaning he had to sit and wait for Arkansas' Roje Stona and LSU's John Meyer have a chance to topple him. However, both of their sixth tries fell short, giving Robinson-O'Hagan the title and a historic sweep.
This was the first men's shot put win by a Rebel in SEC Indoor history, and combined with his win in the weight throw Friday night, Robinson-O'Hagan became the first thrower in SEC history to sweep both events. His monster throw Saturday dismantled his own indoor school record, and it marked Robinson-O'Hagan as the first in Ole Miss history to break 66 feet either indoors or outdoors (after having already done so for the 64 and 65-foot plateaus prior).
This season, that puts him No. 2 in the NCAA heading into the national meet, as well as No. 5 among all throwers in the United States.
Davis had some high drama of her own in the women's shot put final. The reigning SEC runner-up entered the final in eighth place around three feet off her season-best, and it took a stunning feat of athleticism for her winning throw to even count. In the fifth round, Davis let it sail an indoor PR 18.61m/61-00.75, but she nearly fell out of the ring. However, an impressive pirouette saved her throw, and the SEC title along with it as her toss ended up just two centimeters ahead of defending champion Alida van Daalen's sixth-round effort at 18.59m/61-0.
Davis' win makes her just the second woman in SEC history to complete the weight throw and shot put sweep, putting her alongside Florida's Candice Scott who did so both in 2002 and 2005. That toss today also ranks her No. 12 in collegiate history and makes her only the second Rebel to ever cross 61 feet indoors alongside two-time NCAA Champion and two-time Olympian, Raven Saunders.
Ole Miss also received a medal performance out of All-American senior sprinter McKenzie Long, who took bronze in the 200-meter dash final with a breakout season-best performance. Long crossed the line in 22.60, moving her up to No. 3 nationally and putting her square into the conversation for the NCAA Championships in two weeks.
Other Rebels scoring on Saturday included Jahniya Bowers in the women's 60-meter dash final (sixth, 7.26), Loral Winn in the women's mile final (sixth, 4:40.46), Iangelo Atkinstall-Daley in the men's triple jump final (seventh, 15.61m/51-02.75, PR), Marcus Dropik in the men's 800-meter final (seventh, 1:50.02), Toby Gillen in the men's 3K final (seventh, 7:56.08), both Jasmine Mitchell (sixth, 16.60m/54-05.50) and Mensi Stiff (eighth, 16.48m/54-1) in the women's shot put final, and both Cruz Gomez (seventh, 4:03.97) and Gabe Scales (eighth, 4:04.09) in the men's mile final.
Up next for Ole Miss will be the 2024 NCAA Indoor Championships, this year held in Boston for the first time. Qualifying lists for the national meet will be released in the coming days.
