Softball Falls to BYU on First Day of Paradise Classic
2/8/2024 | Softball
HONOLULU, Hawaii – Ole Miss Softball was unable to overcome a five-run first inning by BYU in its season opener, falling 7-4 Thursday afternoon at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
Errors proved costly for the Rebels (0-1, 0-0 SEC) as BYU (2-0, 0-0 Big 12) scored three unearned runs, all in the first inning. Lexie Brady, Aynslie Furbush and Jaden Pone all finished with multi-hit games, including Brady, who drove in three of Ole Miss' four runs, tying her career high.
Ole Miss wasted little time to start the scoring. Pone tallied the team's first hit of the season and advanced on a single by Paige Smith. Batting in the clean-up spot, Brady did her job and drove in the first run of the game.
BYU responded in the bottom half of the inning with five runs of its own. The Cougars took advantage of a pair of errors in the infield to grab a 5-1 advantage.
Looking to climb back into the contest, Delaney Rummell walked, and Furbush singled to start the second, but the threat stalled with the bases loaded after the BYU left fielder made a diving catch to keep Ole Miss off the board.
Catelyn Riley worked a quick second inning, but BYU forced the Rebels to make a pitching change in the third. After a leadoff single, Ole Miss turned to Grace Sparks out of the bullpen. The Cougars tacked on another run with two outs in the frame to extend their lead and added another the following inning to make it 7-1.
Down to their final three outs, the Rebels rallied to score three runs. Ryan Starr led off the inning with a double and came around to score on an RBI single from Pone before Brady launched her first home run of the season. Ole Miss, however, was unable to dig itself out of the deficit, falling to BYU.
The Rebels are back in action against Nevada and Kansas City on February 9 for Day Two of the Paradise Classic.
