NCAA Lead, School Record Kick Off Split Weekend for Track & Field
2/9/2024 | Track and Field
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – A historic showing from the women's weight throwers at Vanderbilt's Music City Challenge and a school record out in Boston at the David Hemery Valentine Invite highlighted the first day of action on a three-way split weekend for Ole Miss track & field on Friday night.
The All-American senior duo of Jalani Davis and Jasmine Mitchell further cemented their legacy among the best collegiate throwers of all time on Friday night following yet another superb pair of performances.
Davis, the defending NCAA Champion in the weight throw, finished third in the invitational women's competition at a career-best 24.64m/80-10.25 on her second attempt to overtake the 2024 NCAA lead from Mitchell. She was the top collegian behind professionals Sade Olatoye (24.90m/81-08.50) and Janeah Stewart (24.80m/81-04.50), and that throw bested her previous PR by one centimeter.
Davis' throw improves upon her spot at No. 5 in collegiate history, and it stands as the ninth-best individual throw of all time. Her throw was also just the 15th in collegiate history to ever travel at least 80 feet, the fourth of her career to tie the all-time record alongside former Ole Miss NCAA Champion Shey Taiwo and former world record holder Brittany Riley of Southern Illinois. That throw also constituted her sixth career toss beyond 24 meters and her 16th beyond 23 meters, both of which tie for third on the all-time list in collegiate history.
Mitchell, meanwhile, came in fourth place at a season-best 24.20m/79-04.75 on her second attempt – which was briefly the new NCAA lead before Davis took over on the very next throw of the competition. Her field series saw three throws eclipse 23 meters, giving her 22 now in her career to break the all-time collegiate record of 21 set by Taiwo. Mitchell's series also featured two beyond 24 meters, giving her six in her career to tie with Davis for third all-time.
In the men's invitational weight throw, All-American sophomore Tarik Robinson-O'Hagan improved to 3-0 following yet another dominant performance. Robinson-O'Hagan led wire-to-wire, with his best of the day coming in the fifth round at a large season-best 23.59m/77-04.75. His winning margin today was nearly seven feet, bringing his season margin to around 4.5 feet in each of his three victories.
His winning toss briefly retook the NCAA lead before Alabama's Ruben Banks threw 23.88m/78-04.25 at Clemson later in the evening. As it stands, Robinson-O'Hagan ranks second in the NCAA, fourth in the United States and fifth worldwide in 2024 at his new season-best from tonight.
Ole Miss received another weight throw victory earlier in the day from freshman Skylar Soli in the open edition of the women's weight. Soli tossed a PR of 20.34m/66-08.75, improving on her spot at No. 9 in Ole Miss history while also moving her into No. 3 among all freshmen nationally and No. 2 among all SEC freshmen.
In Boston late this evening at the Valentine Invite, senior Skylar Boogerd made history again in the women's 5K. Boogerd finished 19th overall at a five-second indoor PR of 15:55.16, breaking her own school record of 16:00.28 from 2023 and in the process becoming the first Rebel woman to ever break 16 minutes indoors. Coincidentally, Boogerd was also the first Ole Miss woman to ever break 16 minutes outdoors in 2022 at what was then a school record of 15:54.46.
Also running in Boston earlier this evening was All-American senior Loral Winn, who ran a new career-best time in the mile. She finished 16th overall at 4:35.36, improving on her spot at No. 2 in Ole Miss history.
At Arkansas' Tyson Invitational, senior transfer Jahniya Bowers had her best day yet as a Rebel following three strong races in the women's 60-meter dash. Bowers – who won the Horizon League titles in both the 60-meter and 200-meter indoors and both the 100-meter and 200-meter outdoors in 2023 while at Youngstown State – began the day with a qualifying performance in the opening round, finishing third at what was then an Ole Miss career-best 7.34.
Bowers followed that up with a runner-up finish at 7.27 in the prelim, moving her from No. 6 to No. 3 on the Ole Miss all-time list in less than two hours. Bowers was consistent in the final as well, finishing third not far off that time at 7.29.
In the men's pole vault at the Tyson Invitational, senior transfer Drew O'Connor put together a career-day, finishing fifth at an overall PR of 5.32m/17-05.50. That height puts him into a tie for third all-time at Ole Miss indoors, making him the third Rebel to clear at least that high since 2020. Before then, only one Rebel had ever jumped that high indoors: three-time Olympian Sam Kendricks.
Competition resumes Saturday for Ole Miss at Vanderbilt at 8:30 a.m. CT, at Arkansas at 10:30 a.m. CT and in Boston at 3:55 p.m. CT.
