REBELS IN THE NATIONAL RANKINGS
• The Rebel women come in at No. 14 in the Week Three USTFCCCA Indoor Rating Index, while the Ole Miss men are just outside the top-25 at No. 31.
• Overall, this is the 53rd ranking for the Rebel women since their first in 2008. Of the 102 combined indoor rankings between the Ole Miss men and women all-time, ninth-year head coach Connie Price-Smith has claimed 69 total appearances indoors (45 women, 24 men).
• The Rebel women are among 10 ranked SEC women's teams in the latest index, which includes three of the top-five ranked schools.
• The Rebel women ended the 2023 regular season ranked No. 9 in the national poll, tied for third-highest in women's program history indoors. In its history indoors, Ole Miss has appeared in the national top-10 a total of 18 times – 13 from the Ole Miss women, and five from the Rebel men. Of those 18 indoor top-10 appearances, 17 have come under the supervision of Price-Smith.
WOMEN'S NOTES
• Senior All-American Jasmine Mitchell and reigning NCAA Champion Jalani Davis currently have a dominant lead nationally in the weight throw after a bombastic opening at Vanderbilt.
• Mitchell, who was named SEC Field Athlete of the Week for her performance, set what was then the world, U.S. and NCAA lead with her third-round winning toss of 24.16m/79-03.25 -- the fourth 24-meter throw of her career and the 25th-best overall throw in collegiate history. Davis finished runner-up and still ranks third nationally behind Mitchell at 24.06m/78-11.25, with Mitchell still reigning atop the NCAA leaderboard this season.
• Those pair of throws by Mitchell and Davis rank second and third, respectively, in collegiate history that early into the season, trailing only a 24.23m/79-6 from Southern Illinois' Brittany Riley on Dec. 7, 2007 -- who was also coached by Ole Miss head coach Connie Price-Smith and throws coach John Smith.
• With the professional season heating up since Ole Miss' season opener at Vanderbilt, Mitchell's throw now ranks No. 4 on both the worldwide and U.S. lists, with Davis not far off at No. 6.
• Mitchell has surpassed 23 meters six times so far this season, giving her 19 career throws beyond that plateau. She ranks second in collegiate history in 23-meter tosses, trailing only former Rebel and 2022 NCAA Champion, Shey Taiwo (21). Davis, meanwhile, ranks fourth with 15 such throws in her career -- three this season.
• At 24 meters, Taiwo and Riley are tied at the top with nine, but Mitchell and Davis are closing in. Davis currently ranks third with five throws beyond 24 meters, with Mitchell fourth at four such feats. On the all-time collegiate leaderboard, Mitchell ranks third at her 2022 NCAA runner-up toss of 24.94m/81-10 and Davis fifth at her 2023 SEC title winning throw of 24.63m/80-9.
• At 80 feet, Davis is just one career throw off the collegiate record, with her three such tosses ranking behind four each from Taiwo and Riley.
• Mitchell and Davis are the first teammate duo in collegiate history to break 24 meters in the same regular season meet and the second pair overall; Mitchell was part of the other duo as well, throwing 24.94m/81-10 as the NCAA runner-up in 2022 to champion Shey Taiwo (25.55m/83-10, No. 2 NCAA history).
• Of the 154 total 23-meter throws in women's collegiate history, Ole Miss has accounted for 64 since 2018 alone, giving the Rebels 41.6 percent of the all-time list. At 24 meters, Ole Miss holds almost half, owning 19 of the 41 total in collegiate history (46.3 percent).
• Davis' SEC leading mark in the shot put of 18.00m/59-00.75 from the Razorback Invitational two weeks ago not only ranks fourth nationally, but also ranks her as the lone woman worldwide this season beyond 18 meters in the shot put and 24 in the weight. Last season, Davis became the first woman in world history to break 60 feet in the shot put and 80 feet in the weight throw.
• In addition to being the reigning NCAA champion in the weight, Davis is also the defending SEC champion in the event, as well as the returning silver medalist in the shot put.
• This past summer, Davis earned a spot on Team USA in the shot put for the World Athletics Championships, punching a ticket to Budapest after a bronze medal finish at USAs, capping a summer that saw her throw both 18.64m/61-2 and 18.62m/61-01.25 in the span of one month.
• Freshman shot putter Mensi Stiff started her Ole Miss career off in excellent fashion at Vanderbilt as well, leading all Rebel women with a third-place finish at 17.17m/56-4. That already makes her the fifth-best in Ole Miss history, and this year it ranks 13th nationally, fifth in the SEC, second nationally among freshmen and best in the SEC by a freshman.
• Stiff's throw makes her one of just eight freshmen nationally to have thrown at least that far since 2015, the sixth since 2022 and one of two to already do so this year.
• This past summer, Stiff won a gold medal for Team USA in the shot put at the Pan American U20 Championships in Puerto Rico.
• Stiff is one of several excellent women's freshman throwers on the Ole Miss squad this season, such as current fellow top-50 members Akaoma Odeluga in the shot put (No. 37, 16.10m/52-10) and Skylar Soli in the weight throw (No. 40, 20.08m/65-10.50). Soli won a silver medal with Stiff at Pan Ams in the hammer.
• All-American and NCAA Outdoor 200-meter runner-up McKenzie Long made her 2024 debut in her marquee indoor events, the 60-meter and 200-meter dashes, two weeks ago at the Razorback Invitational. Long's 200 open of 23.10 currently ranks No. 11 in the NCAA, with her 60-meter time of 7.28 sitting at No. 23. Long opened the season on Jan. 13 in the 400-meter, running a two-second PR of 55.29 -- good for No. 10 in Ole Miss history.
• Last season, Long began a torrid stretch from the end of January through the end of the outdoor season as one of the NCAA's most exciting sprinters. Long would finish as a First-Team All-American indoors in both the 60 and 200 after a rapid set of improvements over the following weeks.
• In Boston this week, senior distance stars Skylar Boogerd and Loral Winn will look for national qualifying times in the 5K and mile, respectively.
• Two weeks ago at the Razorback Invitational, Boogerd ran a 3K PR of 9:22.83 (No. 7 Ole Miss history), and she is currently the Ole Miss record holder in the indoor 5K at 16:00.28 -- run on Vanderbilt's oversized track almost exactly one year ago on Feb. 11, 2023.
• Winn opened in the mile at Arkansas at 4:39.31, with her career-best 4:36.07 also coming nearly one year ago at Vanderbilt on Feb. 10, 2023.
MEN'S NOTES
• Sophomore Tarik Robinson-O'Hagan is off to a great start after a spectacular freshman campaign in 2023, currently ranking second nationally in the weight throw at his SEC-leading 23.12m/75-10.25 and seventh in the shot put at 19.72m/64-08.50 -- just one centimeter off his indoor school record.
• Robinson-O'Hagan is currently the lone thrower worldwide at 75 feet in the weight throw and 64 feet in the shot put.
• Robinson-O'Hagan is undefeated in the weight throw this season, winning by an average of 3.5 feet. Dating back to 2023, he has now won five of six regular season weight throw competitions, sitting at 7-3 when including both the SEC and NCAA Indoor Championships from last season.
• Last season, he set the Ole Miss record and national collegiate freshman record in the weight throw at 23.62m/77-6, and registered three of the six total 23-meter throws by freshmen all-time. At 43.35m, he enters 2024 ranked No. 7 in collegiate history in combined PRs in the indoor shot put (19.73m) and weight throw (23.62m).
• Aside from Robinson-O'Hagan, Ole Miss also owns a pair of other possible SEC scorers in the weight throw in redshirt sophomore Mason Hickel and San Jose State transfer Bryson Smith. Hickel is 2-for-2 on weight throw PRs so far this season, currently ranking eighth in the SEC at 20.38m/66-10.75 (No. 6 Ole Miss history), while Smith made his Rebel debut at a two-foot PR of 19.70m/64-07.75 (No. 8 Ole Miss history).
• At Arkansas' Razorback Invitational, Ole Miss received two strong 3K debuts from transfers Toby Gillen and Jack Meijer, who both broke the eight-minute barrier in their first indoor races as Rebels. Gillen's 7:53.08 currently puts him at No. 5 in the SEC and No. 20 nationally, while Meijer ranks 10th in the SEC and 48th on the NCAA list this year.
• Both Gillen and Meijer, along with senior Texas transfer Cruz Gomez, will highlight the Rebel men's stay at Boston this weekend. Both Gillen and Meijer are slated to run in the 5K, while Gomez will again run in the mile after a 4:00.47 open at Arkansas two weeks ago.
• Gomez owns two sub-four mile times to his credit from his time at Texas, his best being a 3:57.09 from 2022. Gomez also ran on Texas' national title winning distance medley relay team in 2022.
• Senior Marcus Dropik has also gone 2-for-2 on PRs this season in the 800-meter, with his latest of 1:49.18 from Arkansas two weeks ago ranking seventh in the SEC and 47th nationally.
• Sophomore Logan Kelley leads a deep Rebel men's group in the pole vault, currently ranking fourth in the conference at 5.25m/17-02.75. As a freshman in 2023, Kelley set an Ole Miss indoor freshman record in the men's pole vault at 5.32m/17-05.50 -- still his indoor PR that ranks No. 3 in school history.
• Senior Deshaun Jones won the 60-meter hurdles at Vanderbilt last month in his first races in an Ole Miss uniform after sitting out the all of the 2023 indoor and outdoor seasons. Jones won at 7.96, already putting him No. 8 in Ole Miss history and making him one of just nine Rebels to ever break eight seconds.
