Two More School Records Wrap Strong Split Weekend for Track & Field

2/10/2024 | Track and Field

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Ole Miss track & field nabbed two more school records and a wide range of impressive performances on Saturday to close out an excellent weekend of split action across Vanderbilt's Music City Challenge, Arkansas' Tyson Invitational and Boston University's David Hemery Valentine Invitational.

All-American sophomore Tarik Robinson-O'Hagan continued to wreak havoc on the Ole Miss record book, rewriting his own indoor record in the shot put following an impressive performance Saturday at Vanderbilt. Robinson-O'Hagan went toe-to-toe with professional Jordan West in the invitational section of the shot put, finishing runner-up by just 1.5 inches at a new indoor PR of 19.84m/65-01.25.

The two traded the lead in the first round, but West's second-round effort of 19.76m/64-10 put him safely in the lead until the final round, when Robinson-O'Hagan unleashed his new school record – only to be bested by four centimeters on West's final attempt of 19.88m/65-02.75 one throw later.

Saturday's feats are the latest in a long line for Robinson-O'Hagan in his young collegiate career, as he now stands as the first Rebel to break 65 feet in the shot put indoors. During the 2023 outdoor season as a freshman, Robinson-O'Hagan was also the first Rebel to break 65 feet outdoors at his overall career-best 20.07m/65-10.25 from the NCAA East Regional last May.

This season, his toss today puts him No. 3 in the SEC and No. 6 in the NCAA, as well as the lone thrower worldwide in 2024 beyond both 65 feet in the shot put and 77 feet in the weight throw. Entering competition this weekend, Robinson-O'Hagan was also the lone thrower in the world at his then-season bests 64 feet in the shot and 75 feet in the weight.

Ole Miss received another record-breaking performance to close the evening out at Boston's Valentine Invite, with junior transfer Toby Gillen dismantling the indoor 5K record in his first attempt as a Rebel. Gillen finished 22nd overall at a 13-second PR of 13:28.81 in a top-flight field of professional and collegiate runners, breaking Ryan Walling's 2016 record of 13:39.44 by almost 11 seconds.

Earlier in the evening out in Boston, senior transfer Cruz Gomez made history of his own, becoming the 12th Rebel to ever break the iconic four-minute barrier in the men's mile. Gomez clocked in at 3:58.69, good for No. 9 in Ole Miss history.

Back in Nashville, freshman and Tennessee native Mensi Stiff put on a show in her home state with a win in the invitational section of the women's shot put. Stiff – already the Ole Miss freshman record holder in the shot put at her season-opening 17.17m/56-4 in this same ring at Vanderbilt on Jan. 13 – won by nearly a half-foot today on a new Rebel freshman record of 17.54m/57-06.50.

That throw already makes her the fourth-best shot putter in Ole Miss history indoors in just her third collegiate meet, and this season it puts her No. 3 in the SEC and No. 9 in the NCAA. Among freshmen, Stiff ranks second nationally and leads all SEC freshmen. Since 2010, Stiff is among just eight freshman shot putters to ever grace 57 feet indoors.

All-American senior Jalani Davis was the runner-up at 17.39m/57-00.75, while fellow senior Jasmine Mitchell tossed a season-best 17.19m/56-04.75 to finish fourth and move up to No. 13 in the NCAA.

Junior Aiden Britt – another Tennessee native – had a career-day at Vanderbilt in the seeded section of the men's 3K. Britt used a blazing kick down the stretch of 1:29.18 over his final 600 and 43.92 in his last 300 lap to win at an eight-second PR of 7:55.98. That time launches Britt to No. 9 all-time at Ole Miss in the 3K, and it makes him one of just 13 Rebels all-time to break the eight-minute barrier.

Ole Miss' 800-meter squads put in some excellent work on Saturday as well in both men's and women's seeded sections at Vanderbilt.

Senior Marcus Dropik clocked an 800 PR for the third consecutive meet, today finishing fourth overall at 1:48.43 to move up to No. 8 all-time at Ole Miss. Freshman Carson Turner (sixth, 1:49.20, No. 11 all-time) and sophomore Cade Flatt (seventh, 1:49.66, No. 14 all-time) also turned in career-best performances.

In the women's section, junior Madison Hulsey dropped two seconds off her career-best, finishing 11th at 2:07.67 to move up to No. 5 on the Ole Miss all-time indoor list.

Next Saturday, Ole Miss will dispatch its distance medley relay squads for the first time this season, heading to Notre Dame for the Alex Wilson Invite in search of national qualifying times. Meanwhile, the remainder of the Rebel track & field team will be preparing for the 2024 SEC Indoor Championships, which will be held at Arkansas on Feb. 23-24.
