Men’s Golf Wins by Five Strokes to Claim Seminole Intercollegiate Title

3/12/2024 | Men's Golf

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – No. 7 Ole Miss men's golf came out victorious at the Seminole Intercollegiate as it claimed its first tournament title of the season at 851 (-13) overall. The Rebels dominated the field, earning the win by sole possession with a five-stroke lead.

This was a team victory for Ole Miss with five Rebels finishing inside the top 20, four being inside the top 10. This is the first time Ole Miss has had four players end inside the top 10 in a tournament this season.

Michael La Sasso (3rd, -6) earned his fourth top-5 finish of the season out of his six tournament appearances. Individual Kye Meeks (T4, -5) claimed a career-best finish with his first top-5 finish of his career. Cameron Tankersley (6th, -4) earned a season-best finish and his second top-10 finish of the season. Tim Tillmanns (7th, -2) also earned a season-best finish and his 15th top-10 finish of his career. Tom Fischer (T14, +3) rose 23 spots on the leaderboard in the final round to give him his third top-20 finish of the season.

"To beat a really good team like Florida State on their home course, you have to do all of the little things right," said head coach Chris Malloy. "I'm really proud of this group and the way that they fought without their best stuff this week. As I told the guys, winning is contagious, so hopefully they find a way to build on this momentum."

Ole Miss had the best round of the day out of the 14-team field at 285 (-3), the only team to shoot under par on the final day on the Seminole Legacy Golf Course. The third-round success helped push Ole Miss to seal the victory and rise from its 2nd place spot coming into the final round.

Overall, the Rebels led the field in par 3 scoring (-2), par 4 scoring (+4) and birdies (53). Meeks was the top individual in birdies, making 16 during his time in Tallahassee while La Sasso was second in the field in par 5 scoring (-5).

La Sasso continued his hot streak with the Rebels as he remains in sole possession of Ole Miss' top finisher for every tournament this season. The sophomore earned back-to-back top 5 finishes as he finished in 2nd at the Cabo Collegiate last week. La Sasso becomes the first Rebel to earn two consecutive top-5 finishes since Sarut Vongchaisit during the 2023 spring season.

Competing individually, Meeks played steady, successful golf all week as all three of his rounds were under par. His final round of 70 (-2) was led by a strong push in his last 10 holes where he went on a tear with five straight birdies made and a birdie on his final hole of the day. Meeks tied for 4th finish secured a new career-best and first top 5 finish of his career.

Tankersley's two pairs of back-to-back birdies earned him his second top-10 finish of the season and his fifth in his career. His 6th place finish also marks a season-best for the sophomore. Through three rounds, Tankersley made 13 birdies to contribute to Ole Miss' team win.

Tillmanns, a Kansas State transfer, grabbed his 15th top-10 finish of his career and second of the season. His 7th place finish also was a season best for the senior. He secured his 7th place finish with a bogey-free front nine and making three birdies in his final round.

Fischer shot one of the best rounds of the day for Ole Miss with a 70 (-2) final round score. The sophomore maintained a bogey-free back nine to raise him 23 spots on the leaderboard and enter the top 20.

Patton Samuels ended his time at the Seminole Intercollegiate tied for 28th at 7-over overall.

Ole Miss will look to continue its winning momentum in its next tournament at the Mason Rudolph Intercollegiate from April 5-7 in Nashville, Tennessee.
