Softball Drops Series to No. 22 South Carolina
3/30/2024 | Softball
OXFORD, Miss. – The longball was the difference as Ole Miss softball fell to No. 22 South Carolina 8-3 on Saturday at the Ole Miss Softball Complex.
The Rebels (20-13, 3-8 SEC) struggled with runners in scoring position, going 1-for-13 and stranding 10 on base. The Gamecocks (25-10, 2-6 SEC) took advantage of three home runs to grab the series victory on the road.
Ole Miss got on the board in the first inning. Jalia Lassiter was hit by a pitch, and Lexie Brady walked with two outs before Aynslie Furbush drove in the first run of the game with an RBI single through the left side. The Rebels threatened for more after a dropped fly ball loaded the bases and extended the inning, but they couldn't capitalize.
After being held in check in the first two frames, South Carolina went on to score in every inning the remainder of the contest. The Gamecocks took a 2-1 lead in the second on a pair of singles and a triple and continued to extend it with three home runs.
Trailing 8-1 in the bottom of the seventh, Ole Miss continued to fight. Lassiter and Jaden Pone hit back-to-back singles, and Brady walked to load the bases. A Furbush sacrifice fly scored Lassiter, and a throwing error by the center fielder allowed a second run to score, but that was all as the Rebels fell 8-3.
Ole Miss closes out the series with No. 22 South Carolina on Sunday, March 31, at 11 a.m. CT on SEC Network.
