Softball Falls to #17 Mississippi State to Open SEC Play

3/8/2024 | Softball

OXFORD, Miss. – Ole Miss softball dropped its SEC opener on Friday night, falling to #17 Mississippi State 5-1 at the Ole Miss Softball Complex.

The Rebels (15-6, 0-1 SEC) battled with their in-state rival, but the Bulldogs (18-3, 1-0 SEC) came out on top in the series opener after a strong pitching performance.

Mississippi State struck early, loading the bases in each of the first two innings. Ole Miss nearly escaped the first unscathed after the Bulldog runner on first base left early on what would have been an RBI double, but an error allowed MSU to scratch a run across in the opening frame. The following inning, the Bulldogs once again threatened with the bases loaded, forcing the Rebels to turn to Brianna Lopez out of the bullpen. Mississippi State added a pair of runs on a sacrifice fly and a bases-loaded walk to extend its lead to 3-0 after two.

Looking to answer, Ole Miss tried to put together a two-out rally of its own. Aynslie Furbush singled down the left field line and walks to Angelina DeLeon and Taylor Malvin loaded the bases; however, the Rebels couldn't capitalize.

Lopez and the defense settled in nicely. The junior lefty retired eight in a row as she worked through the fifth inning and stranded a pair in the sixth to keep the Rebels within striking distance.

Ole Miss got on the board in the bottom of the sixth inning and threatened to make things interesting. Jaden Pone singled, reaching base for the 17th straight game, with one away in the frame. The speedy outfielder tagged up on a flyout to left field to move into scoring position and raced around the bases to get the Rebels on the board on a clutch RBI single from Lexie Brady.

Mississippi State tacked on two runs in the top of the seventh for insurance and used an inning-ending double-play to finish off the night.

The Rebels look to even the series on Saturday, March 9. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. CT.
