Long, McKenzie

School Record, Windy 200-Meter Lead Track & Field at Day One of Tom Jones Memorial

4/12/2024 | Track and Field

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – A blazing 200-meter open for All-American senior McKenzie Long and a school record by sophomore Gabrielle Matthews led a solid first day of action for Ole Miss track & field at Day One of Florida's Tom Jones Memorial on Friday.

Long, who has finished as the NCAA runner-up in the 200-meter in each of her last two trips to the national meet, looked superb in her outdoor debut in the event on Friday in what could be an early preview of the coming NCAA final in June.

With a massive wind at her back, Long cruised to victory at 22.18 (+4.1) in a heat that featured South Carolina freshman JaMeesia Ford (22.41) – who beat out Long for the NCAA Indoor title back in March. That huge 4.1 meters per second wind reading negates Long's time from the NCAA qualifying lists and the all-time record books, but it does rank No. 2 on the world all-conditions list for the 2024 outdoor season.

Combined with her windy (but NCAA allowable) 10.89 (+2.6) in the 100-meter dash from two weeks ago, Long now stands alongside U.S. Olympian Gabby Thomas as the lone women worldwide this outdoor season at sub-11.00 in the 100 and sub-22.20 in the 200 amid all wind conditions. Thomas owns a slightly windy 10.88 (+2.2) in the 100, and a legal 22.08 (+1.2) in the 200.

Matthews followed that with another big performance for the Rebel women's sprinters in the invitational section of the 400-meter hurdles. Matthews finished sixth overall at a new PR of 56.72, which broke her own Ole Miss record of 57.04 set as a freshman in the SEC prelim last spring.

This season in the hurdles, Matthews ranks second among all Jamaican sprinters, as well as 11th in the NCAA, seventh in the East Region and fifth in the SEC. Both Long and Matthews are also scheduled to run on Ole Miss' 4x100-meter relay on Saturday.

Two-time NCAA Champion and senior Jalani Davis took care of business again in what turned out to be a highly talented invitational section of the women's shot put. Davis was the lone woman to crack 60 feet in the competition, winning at 18.48m/60-07.75. Davis was one of two to break 18 meters and one of five to throw beyond 17 meters, but she was the lone thrower to hit beyond 18 meters multiple times – ultimately winning by more than 1.5 feet over Jamaican professional Daniel Thomas-Dodd at 18.01m/59-01.25.

Freshman Akaoma Odeluga also made the final, finishing eighth overall at 16.55m/54-03.75.

In the men's shot put invite, meanwhile, sophomore Tarik Robinson-O'Hagan finished third in a tough competition of his own. He topped out at 20.16m/66-01.75, and was one of three to break 20 meters in the field.

Redshirt junior Madison Hulsey continued to prove her versatility as a middle distance runner, turning in a strong performance in the women's 1500-meter on Friday night. Hulsey finished seventh overall at a whopping 11-second PR of 4:19.93, which moves her up to No. 7 in Ole Miss history. Combined with her 800-meter PR of 2:05.99 from the Joe Walker Invite last week, Hulsey now stands alongside NCAA Champion Sintayehu Vissa as the lone Rebel women to break 2:06 in the 800 outdoors and 4:20 in the 1500.

Sophomore Sophie Baumann also posted an all-time performance in the 1500-meter, finishing 15th at a PR of 4:23.08 – good for No. 14 in school history.

In the men's pole vault invite, sophomore Logan Kelley (T-8th) and redshirt junior Drew O'Connor (T-11th) both cleared 5.15m/16-10.75 – which for Kelley ties his outdoor PR that ranks No. 8 in Ole Miss history outdoors.

Action resumes for Ole Miss on Day Two of the Tom Jones Memorial at 8 a.m. CT on Saturday with the women's discus.
