Softball Run-Rules WKU 11-3 to Even Series

4/13/2024 | Softball

OXFORD, Miss. – Ole Miss softball bounced back with an offensive explosion to even the series with Western Kentucky, picking up a big 11-3 win in six innings Saturday afternoon at the Ole Miss softball complex.

The Rebels joined all 13 teams in the SEC in wearing teal to promote awareness of ovarian cancer and in honor of Alex Wilcox, a former Mississippi State softball student-athlete, and her courageous battle against ovarian cancer.

After dropping game one on Friday night, Ole Miss (22-19, 3-12 SEC) responded with a dominant showing. Five of the offense's 12 hits went for extra bases, including back-to-back triples from Ryan Starr and Jalia Lassiter and a grand slam by Aynslie Furbush. Grace Sparks had a strong outing in the circle, allowing three runs over 4.0 innings to improve to 5-0 on the season, and Catelyn Riley finished the job with two scoreless frames.

Western Kentucky got on the board in the first inning with a solo home run, but the Rebel offense punched back in the home half. Two walks and a single loaded the bases for Furbush, who blasted Ole Miss' first grand slam of the season and the third of her career.

Leading 4-1 after the first, the Rebels extended the lead to five with the help of back-to-back triples from Starr and Lassiter in the second.

The Hilltoppers got both runs back in the fourth on a pair of solo home runs, but Sparks minimized the damage to keep it a 6-3 contest. Her offense went right back to work in the bottom half of the inning, loading the bases and driving in three runs on free passes and an RBI single from Delaney Rummell.

With the run-rule looming, Ole Miss' seniors took matters into their own hands. Paige Smith and Furbush smacked back-to-back doubles to stand in scoring position with no outs. Rummell ripped another one down the line in right, which proved to be the walk-off winner.

Ole Miss and Western Kentucky will square off on Sunday, April 14, in a rubber match. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. CT.
