Furbush and Mackay Blast Grand Slams as Softball Walks Off WKU
4/14/2024 | Softball
OXFORD, Miss. – Aynslie Furbush and Jamie Mackay blasted grand slams as Ole Miss softball walked off Western Kentucky 12-3 in five innings to secure the series Sunday afternoon.
Furbush drove in a career-high six runs, hitting her second grand slam in as many days. She also belted a solo shot and walked in a run. Mackay sent the Rebels (23-19, 3-12 SEC) home early with a walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the fifth. In total, the Ole Miss offense came alive for 12 runs on 11 hits, posting back-to-back games with 10-plus runs for the first time this season.
Brianna Lopez earned the victory in the circle, tossing 3.0 innings of work. The lefty picked up her 300th career strikeout in the third inning.
For the second straight day, Furbush gave the Rebels the early lead with a grand slam. Her shot to straight away center capped off four straight hits, which game Ole Miss a 4-0 lead after one.
Western Kentucky clawed back within one run by the third inning, slowly chipping away at the Rebels' lead, but Furbush's second home run of the day and an RBI sacrifice fly from Annie Orman gave Ole Miss some breathing room.
Ole Miss loaded the bases again in the bottom of the fifth inning and rallied for six runs to bring the run rule into effect. All six batters in the inning reached base before Mackay drove in the final four runs with the second Rebel grand slam of the day.
The Rebels are back in action on Tuesday, April 16, hosting Louisiana Tech in a midweek doubleheader. Game one is slated to begin at 3 p.m. CT, with game two to follow at 5:30 p.m.
