4/25/2024 | Track and Field

DES MOINES, Iowa – Ole Miss track & field kicked off a busy weekend with a productive first day of action at the 114th running of the historic Drake Relays on Thursday evening.

The Rebels were represented in both elite invitational fields of the hammer throw, both of which are part of the World Athletics Continental Tour and are worth valuable World Ranking points ahead of this summer.

In the women's edition, Rebel senior and two-time NCAA champ Jalani Davis led the way on a windy day at Drake Stadium, finishing fourth overall at 66.90m/219-6. Fellow All-American senior Jasmine Mitchell was also in the elite field, finishing eighth at 64.82m/212-8.

In the men's invitational, sophomore Tarik Robinson-O'Hagan finished sixth in a stacked field of his own, topping out on his first attempt heave of 70.81m/232-3.

Ole Miss also ran in several races to kick off Drake's distance carnival on Thursday evening. Junior Beth Arentz and sophomore Hannah Ielfield posted the top performances of the night in their respective events following career-best outings.

Arentz finished 13th overall in the university/college division women's open 5K race, clocking in at a 12-second PR of 16:14.59. That time moves her up to No. 9 in Ole Miss history from her prior ranking of No. 13.

In the university/college edition of the women's 3000-meter steeplechase, Ielfield finished 13th at a PR of her own, finishing in 10:39.08 to move up to No. 10 in school history.

Also running for the Rebels on Thursday was sophomore Evan Thornton-Sherman, who finished seventh in the men's open 5K at 14:09.83.

Ole Miss will return to action on Saturday both at the Drake Relays and down in Baton Rouge, where the remainder of the team is set to compete in the LSU Invitational. Friday night at Drake, former Rebel great and 2023 SEC steeplechase champion Kristel van den Berg will run in the invitational section of the women's steeple at 7:56 p.m. CT.
