Softball Falls to Auburn in Extra Innings

4/26/2024 | Softball

OXFORD, Miss. – Battling into extra innings in a pitcher's duel, Ole Miss softball fell to Auburn 2-1 on Friday night at the Ole Miss Softball Complex.

The Rebels (26-23, 3-16 SEC) and the Tigers (25-15-1, 7-12 SEC) needed 11 innings to decide the series opener. Both teams stranded a combined 27 runners on base as the pitching and defense shined. Jalia Lassiter led the Ole Miss offense, finishing a home run shy of the cycle. She singled in her first at-bat of the night to collect the 100th hit of her career. Paige Smith also tallied a pair of singles and walks. The senior continued her climb into the top-10, passing Lisa Conchos (2006-09) for the ninth most hits in program history.

Ole Miss managed to grab the early lead, scoring on a bases loaded walk in the third inning. Reigning SEC Pitcher of the Year, Maddie Penta locked in and gave the Tigers 9.0 strong innings, striking out a career-high 18 batters.

Auburn tied the game at one in the top of the sixth in a solo home run and nearly pushed across the go-ahead run in the seventh, but Jamie Mackay made a nice defensive play to throw out the runner at the plate as she attempted to tag up and score on a fly ball to shallow right.

Pone and the Rebels had an opportunity to close things out in the home half of the seventh after a leadoff infield single, but the junior was stranded at second, and the contest went into extras.

In the ninth, Ole Miss looked as if it was going to walk off the Tigers and win the game following a leadoff triple. Lassiter flared a ball to right field that dropped in front of the defender and took a weird hop, rolling past her. The speedy sophomore raced around the bases to set the Rebels up with a prime opportunity to walk off the game, but Penta struck out the side to silence the threat.

The Tigers took their turn to threaten in the 10th, loading the bases with two outs. Grace Sparks held her composure in the circle and was able to secure a flyout to send Ole Miss back to the plate.

Auburn finally broke the tie in the 11th with a leadoff home run by Icess Tresvik, her second of the night.

Down to its final three outs, Ole Miss was unable to rally to extend the game, falling 2-1 in the opener.

The Rebels look to even the series on Saturday, April 27. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. CT. Before the game, Ole Miss will honor the four members of its senior class.
